What We Need
Cascade Bicycle Club invites applications for the role of VOLUNTEER AND PEDALING RELIEF PROJECT MANAGER. We seek a dedicated and strategic individual with a profound understanding of community engagement and a commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a deep appreciation for bicycling and will play a pivotal role in advancing the club's mission and further establishing its position as a leading organization in cycling and active transportation.
The Volunteer and Pedaling Relief Manager is an essential member of the Rides and Events Team and reports to the Rides and Events Director. This position is responsible for general program oversight of two main volunteer programs working with 200+ volunteers: rides and events, and the Pedaling Relief Project (PRP).
Our rides and events season runs from May-October with a variety of one day, two day, and multi-day rides throughout Washington. PRP is a program that delivers food by bike to food-insecure neighbors from food banks and grocery stores across Seattle.

Cascade Bicycle Club, the nation's largest statewide bicycle nonprofit, is 10,000-members, 54-years old, and 38-staff strong, serving bike riders of all ages and abilities throughout the state of Washington. We teach the joys of bicycling, advocate for safe places to ride, and produce community rides and events. Our signature programs include the Seattle to Portland ride, the Pedaling Relief Project, advocacy for connected trail networks and on-street bike networks in Seattle and across Puget Sound, Your Streets Your Say, Free Group Rides, Adult Classes, Let's Go, and the Major Taylor Project.

What You’ll Bring
Duties and Responsibilities
- Volunteer Management
- Develop, build and maintain positive, long-term relationships with volunteers, facilitating good communication with and between volunteers.
- Actively organize, coordinate, and manage the recruitment of volunteers with a focus on developing partnerships with social, civic, and community-based institutions and organizations.
- Develop standardized training and communication resources for consistent volunteer orientation, communication, and effective staff-volunteer interactions.
- Interview potential volunteers and match their talents with organizational needs.
- Collaborate with other members of the Events team to support the ride season, especially in leading day-of volunteer activities.
- Act as the Cascade liaison in the Volunteer Steering Committees for volunteer programs.
- Volunteer Operations
- Support day-to-day volunteer operations as needed, including scheduling volunteers, updating volunteer databases, responding to email and telephone inquiries, troubleshooting volunteer problems, and being the primary point of contact.
- Generate reports and insights from the database to guide strategic decisions and planning.
- Establish and adhere to success metrics for various volunteer programs.
- Develop and oversee the volunteer program budget and manage volunteer reimbursements.
- Oversee and ensure the accurate maintenance of the volunteer database and signup portal.
- Coordinate with different departments across the organization in support of volunteer programs, including the fleet team, marketing and communications, and fundraising/development.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to develop, implement, and oversee effective volunteer recruitment, training, and retention strategies that align with organizational objectives.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a focus on building positive relationships, working effectively as part of a team, and managing volunteers.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ensuring clear and consistent messaging to volunteers, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in establishing and nurturing partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and schools to promote volunteerism and collaborative initiatives.
- Ability to address and mediate conflicts or issues that arise between volunteers or between volunteers and staff, ensuring a harmonious work environment.
- Technological skills to effectively update and navigate volunteer management software and databases
- Attention to detail and organizational skills, especially related to managing budgets, resources, and logistics
- A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the volunteer community and an understanding of how to engage volunteers from varied backgrounds and experiences.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, provide mentorship, and manage personnel, ensuring efficient operations and high levels of engagement.
- Experience in community outreach, stakeholder collaboration, or partnership-building
- Hands-on experience in organizing, leading, and managing events
- Proficiency in using volunteer management software or databases, or ability to learn new technologies
- Experience in designing, executing, and evaluating training sessions or workshops for volunteers
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to plan ahead, meet deadlines and goals, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to lift 25 pounds to load and stage supplies with the help of dollies or carts.
- Ability to regularly spend several hours on your feet moving around event sites.
- Reliable transportation to various volunteer events, sometimes located in rural locations or starting early in the morning
- Experience with graphic design tools (preferred)
- Experience with mapping tools such as Ride With GPS and CalTopo (preferred)
Job Details
This position is full-time exempt and remote-hybrid eligible. Generally, work can be done off-site, provided there is no loss to team collaboration, the needs of the organization, and the essential functions of the position. However, residence in Washington state and the ability to come into the office one to three days a week are required. During the event season of May - October expect to be available to work regular evening and weekend shifts. Typical weekly hours for this position are 40.
