POSITION DESCRIPTION
America Votes is seeking a well-organized self-starter for a full-time, 2022 cycle position as the Get Out the Vote Director in the following States: FL, GA, MI, MN, NC, NV, OH, PA, WI. The GOTV Director plays a key role in the advancement of the progressive movement and winning elections in the state. This person will be the keeper and coordinator of some of the most exciting voter outreach and education work in the state. The position works directly with the America Votes team, as well as dozens of progressive partners across the state, in the planning and execution of mobilization programs to Get Out the Vote in key states.
The GOTV Director will be responsible for early planning, alignment, and execution of voter education, voter engagement, and mobilization efforts across partner programs recognizing the expanded program calendars of individual states (i.e. early in-person voting, vote by mail, and in-person on Election Day). The position reports directly to their respective state’s director. The position ends December 31, 2022.

The GOTV positions are based in the state where they are assigned. The cities below are the preferred, but not the required location. Other localities in the state are negotiable.

The role may require some travel and reasonable access to an airport is required. America Votes is currently working remotely, however if you are based in a state with an America Votes office, a hybrid approach may be possible depending on local guidance during the temporary period of remote work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic planning assistance – support coalition partners through the development of GOTV campaign plans that recognize expanded timelines for voting, providing technical and organizing assistance, responding to programmatic requests, and supporting the implementation of successful strategies. This may include vote by mail plans, absentee plans, early-in person voting, and Election Day voting campaigns.
- Lead the coalition planning related to Get Out the Vote including managing the plan development and coalition partner engagement.
- Support coalition coordination by tracking mobilization programs including organizational programs, monitoring benchmarks, providing technical assistance including scaling up tactics and basic use of tools like VAN, and identifying gaps in collective strategy.
- Lead coalition campaigns work on voter education, mobilization and early vote field campaigns (like canvassing) including supporting the integration of best practices as well as managing coordination and universe coverage.
- Support program implementation across partner organizations including script development and program timing and support some partners in using VAN (Voter Activation Network) or other direct voter contact tools like GetThru and Scale to Win.
- Support the development of capacity-building opportunities for partners and work directly with the state director and state team to assess program gaps and overlaps to maximize program impact.
- Support the implementation of America Votes specific programs.
- Depending on the state, support or lead efforts to stay abreast of changing state election administration laws. Make programmatic recommendations based on the information and ensure streamlined communication systems to keep all stakeholders informed.
- Support events of America Votes partners and allies including coalition meetings, trainings, and voter engagement programs.
- Work closely with allies to support election protection and election integrity programs
- Support the management and alignment with national America Votes departments, including Spread Out the Vote. Work with and manage vendor relationships as needed.
- Lead and support coalition and work group meetings, sometimes on short notice.
- Develop and complete frequent (weekly then daily closer to Election Day) reports on progress toward team and coalition campaign goals, including at least program coverage across multiple tactics for vote-by-mail, early vote, election day voting, and same day registration efforts (as applicable by state).
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
- Ideal candidates will have at least 5-7 years of experience in proogressive political campaigns, progressive non-profits (with an organizing focus), or similar transferable experience and a minimum two years of project management experience. Experience in a campaign leadership position is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with underrepresented and/or historically marginalized communities, particularly in political, electoral, and organizing settings.
- Strong sense of ownership and resilience with respect to planning ahead, finding alternative paths when needed, and bouncing back from setbacks and rejections. Demonstrated ability to move people to action and hold them accountable with and without formal authority.
- Experience with campaign field operations including canvass operations and script writing. Familiarity with VAN (Voter Activation Network) or similar systems like Vote Builder. Understanding of canvass operations and how to scale programs. Familiarity and experience with direct mail programs strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus, negotiate, and strategically disagree within a highly collaborative work environment; ability to be respected by progressive stakeholders, to be trusted to lead and to be able to practice confidentiality, discretion and legal compliance in the work.
- At least two years of experience working in a coalition including experience facilitating and working within broad and diverse coalitions. Ability to build strong relationships with partners and allies and to cultivate those relationships over the long term.
- Ability to work independently and to drive and manage own workload; ability to manage several tasks/projects concurrently and prioritize work effectively by making and meeting team goals.
- Experience with data and targeting, using data to inform organizing and electoral campaign strategies. Understanding of common voter contact methods like canvass, mail, and phone programs and applying those to persuasion and mobilization efforts, including vote by mail.
- Excellent writing, communication, presentation, and time management skills, with attention to detail.
- High level of competency with excel or google sheets, google presentations or related tools. Must be comfortable using spreadsheets, and should have a working knowledge of: pivot tables, filters, text to columns, and creating simple charts using Excel or a similar tool.
- Ability to travel within the state (as needed); ability to work irregular campaign style hours , especially during the peak months of the electoral cycle. Must be a self-starter.
- Candidates should have a spirit of service and curiosity, along with a diplomatic approach to problem-solving in work with outside partners and while working independently or on a team.
PREFERRED
- Knowledge of and experience with independent expenditure political campaigns.
- Experience using voter contact tools like Get Thru or Scale to Win.
- Familiarity with digital and/or mail campaigns and tools.
- Experience working vendors.
- Experience administering programs using VAN or willingness to learn.
- Experience or training in race equity/anti-racist frameworks; a general understanding of how power. intersects with gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and class in organizing and electoral settings.
- Familiarity with analyst institute voter mobilization best practices.
- Familiarity with Get Out the Vote and vote by mail operations.
COMPENSATION
The salary for this position will be between $70,000-$80,000 ($5,830 - $6,667 monthly) and depend upon the applicant’s experience. America Votes offers a competitive benefits package covering 90% of employee medical, dental, & vision insurance premiums, life insurance, long term disability coverage, cell phone stipend, personal professional development funds, parental leave, and 401 (K) after six months of continuous service with the organization. America Votes provides a generous paid time off policy with paid vacation, paid sick leave and personal days, at least 10 Federal paid holidays including Juneteenth, as well as paid organizational time off from at least December 25 to January 1. This position ends December 31, 2022. .
