Position Summary:

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity and respect. Our ten different departments are staffed by experts who help over 225,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our programs range from 100% affordable housing at 21 locations to our family violence program to Holocaust survivor assistance to senior programming to crisis intervention to the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 75 food pantries, affordable housing sites and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.

The role of the Food Pantry Associate is to support the food pantry at 5361 Preston Court, Brooklyn, New York. The Food Pantry Associate will be primarily responsible for stocking the pantry and assisting clients with the digital system.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Stocking of the pantry for bi-weekly distributions.
  • Complete intake with new clients.
  • Support existing clients with ordering and the fulfillment of food orders.
  • Coordinate volunteers onsite as available and appropriate.

Competencies:

Attention to detail, customer focused, self starter, motivated, planning and organization, good communication skills.

Skill and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • At least two years of work experience preferred
  • Good computer literacy
  • Good motivation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the capability to multi-task

Language Skills: Fluent in English, Bilingual preferred.

Mathematical Skills: Basic

Reasoning Ability: Ability to function effectively within a busy environment and to make appropriate and safe decisions

Physical Demands:

  1. Required Constantly: Walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, computer input, finger dexterity and coordination of hand, eye and foot. Lifting boxes weighing between up to 30 lbs to stock shelves or tables
  2. Required Frequently: Standing and climbing stairs; carrying laptop & files (approx. 8-10 lbs)
  3. Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting 5-25 pounds, pushing and pulling
