Are you interested in using your legal skills to help all types of nonprofits across New York State? The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON), the state’s largest association of nonprofit organizations, seeks a motivated, inspired attorney to assist our charitable, education and faith-based members in an innovative, dynamic and multi-disciplinary team environment. The Associate Attorney provides legal representation, consultation and general assistance to approximately 3,200 NYCON nonprofit members relative to the following legal disciplines: corporate, tax, employment, contract, municipal, administrative, and, real/personal/intellectual property. Comprehensive, ongoing on-the-job training is provided; this position reports to NYCON’s Senior Attorney.

Candidates must reside in New York State and admission or pending admission to practice law in New York is required.

Typical legal services offered by trained Associate Attorney includes:

  • forming nonprofit corporations and preparing various tax-exemption applications;
  • drafting and reviewing corporate governance documents, policies and procedures;
  • effectuating nonprofit affiliations, mergers and dissolutions;
  • interacting with state and federal regulatory agencies;
  • advising as to proper board governance and nonprofit operational practices;
  • preparing and reviewing contracts, leases and employment agreements;
  • offering guidance concerning human resources and labor and employment law;
  • advising nonprofits in regulatory, financial or public relations crisis and recommending appropriate responsive strategies and tactics and necessary risk management practices;
  • assisting with the proper safeguard of intellectual property, confidential information, privileged corporate information, etc.;
  • analyzing and offering opinions on matters of public policy and developments in the law;
  • developing, preparing and delivering trainings, seminars and presentations on topics within the attorney’s scope of knowledge and experience;
  • conducting legal research and drafting position papers and opinions; and,
  • generally, offering the best assistance possible to NYCON’s nonprofit members.

Hiring criteria:

Applicants must possess the following criteria:

  • Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school;
  • admission to practice law in New York, free or any prior disciplinary action;
  • meaningful post-admission legal experience preferred;
  • ability to occasionally travel within NYS and infrequently work evening/weekend hours, as needed;
  • valid, unrestricted driver’s license; and,
  • demonstrated commitment to NYCON’s charitable mission.

Salary, benefits and schedule:

  • $68,000 annual salary (candidates meeting all stipulated employment criteria)
  • Employment fully qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) of qualified student loans
