The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks a detail-oriented, highly organized Development Associate to provide critical administrative, project management, research, and writing support to the development team. This is an exciting opportunity to support a growing team and to

NELP has a team of 55 staff people based across offices in New York City, Washington D.C., and Berkeley, CA, with an 11-person Board of Directors, an annual budget of $14M, and hundreds of partners in the field with whom we work to further our mission.


What You Will Do


The Development Associate will work in close collaboration with our staff to support NELP’s fundraising goals. This position offers exposure to many aspects of institutional and individual fundraising, including managing donor acknowledgements and deadline tracking, maintaining donor records, strengthening existing project management systems, and conducting prospect research on new funders. With increased experience, the Development Associate will also take on writing projects, such as grant report and individual donor appeal drafting, and build skills in funder relationship management. 


 The Development Associate will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage and maintain accurate grant and individual donor records in Salesforce and ActBlue, including donor acknowledgements.
  • Manage the development team deadlines calendar and enhance project management for institutional and individual giving activities.
  • Coordinate grant and individual donation payment tracking and reconciliation processes with the finance team.
  • Conduct foundation prospect research on new funding opportunities that align with NELP’s programmatic work.
  • Liaise with operations and program and strategy staff across NELP to support foundation and individual donor outreach and stewardship.
  • Support with drafting and copyediting development materials as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the development team, including managing a centralized email inbox and assisting with scheduling.
  • Work with the development team to cultivate staff engagement in fundraising initiatives.

 

Who You Are

  • You have at least 2 years of fundraising and/or relevant administrative experience at a nonprofit. 
  • You have experience with and/or an interest in learning about workers’ rights, economic justice, and racial justice work.
  • You enjoy creating more efficient systems and processes; you are detail-oriented, highly organized, and have a demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and meet objectives.
  • You are skilled at conducting high-quality and thorough research and analysis.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization’s mission and impact to a variety of audiences.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills that will enable you to work collaboratively with staff across the organization as well as a desire to build skills in donor relationship management. 
  • You have proficiency in donor and project management platforms (e.g., Salesforce, ActBlue, and Monday.com).
  • You have strong racial equity competencies and center your role in understanding how race and power shape systems in our society and culture, including fundraising and philanthropy.
  • You operate with a commitment to excellence, integrity, diplomacy, and camaraderie.


Start Date, Location, Compensation and Benefits: This position will be based out of our New York City office. NELP has a hybrid model that requires staff to work in-person at least six days per month. This hybrid model seeks to leverage both the benefits of working with colleagues in-person and the benefits of flexible remote arrangements. The start date will be as soon as possible.

 

This position is in NELP’s bargaining unit, represented by National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320. Classification and compensation for NELP bargaining unit positions are commensurate with relevant experience and education and based on NELP’s collectively bargained scales. Based on our union scale, the Development Associate’s salary would be $72,100-$79,150. Here are some examples of salaries: 


  • with a BA and 2 years’ post-degree relevant experience, the salary will be $72,100; and at 5 years the salary will be $79,150; and
  • with a Master’s and 2 years’ post-degree relevant experience, the salary will be $76,800; and at 3 years the salary will be $79,150. 

 

The differences in salaries are based on education and years of relevant experience. Compensation at NELP includes an excellent comprehensive benefits package, including full coverage of family health insurance, a medical reimbursement plan, generous vacation and sick leave, plus additional organization-wide holidays, significant contribution from employer to a retirement plan (both an unelected contribution and employer match); and for qualifying participants, up to 26 weeks paid parental leave, 12 weeks paid medical leave, 6 weeks of paid family medical caregiving leave, a sabbatical leave program, childcare/eldercare reimbursement assistance, and student loan repayment assistance.
