Position Summary
The Office of Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. seeks a full-time Staff/Press Assistant to join our Washington, D.C. office. This entry-level position plays a critical role in both front office operations and communications strategy, and supports the Member and staff in day-to-day tasks. Ideal candidates are motivated self-starters, detail-oriented, highly organized, possess outstanding customer service and problem solving skills, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Core Responsibilities
Staff Assistant Duties (under the direction of the Director of Operations):
- Greet visitors and answer phones with professionalism and courtesy
- Coordinate and track flag and tour requests (Capitol, White House, FBI, etc.)
- Maintain an organized front office environment and fulfill administrative tasks such as sorting mail, ordering supplies, printing materials, and assisting with meeting set-up
- Assist the Director of Operations in managing the intern program, including recruitment, training, and scheduling
- Assist in back-up driving duties to take the Congressman to official events if the Chief or the Director of Operations are unavailable
Press Assistant Duties (under the direction of the Communications Director):
- Monitor national and local media coverage and compile daily press clips
- Draft and edit press releases, advisories, franked communications, and other communications materials as assigned
- Support the office’s social media strategy by producing and editing digital content, including graphics and short-form videos
- Help plan and execute press events, interviews, and digital outreach
- Maintain press contact lists and support external communications efforts
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a comms or digital capacity
- Prior congressional internship or campaign experience preferred
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Strong experience with social media platforms, digital tools, and graphic design
- Professional and positive demeanor, sound judgment, and strong attention to detail
- Comfort with tight deadlines and ability to manage multiple projects with ease
- Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends when needed
- A valid driver’s license and, preferably, access to a personal vehicle
- California ties preferred but not required

Base Salary Range: $53,000-55,000
