Job Title: Communications Specialist

Reports To: (Direct Report): Director of Communications

Salary: $50,000 - $75,000

Workweek: 35(+) Hours

The New Jersey Senate Majority Office (SMO), an integral component of the Legislative branch, dedicated to providing legal, policy, and communications support to the Democratic members of the New Jersey State Senate. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Specialist plays a pivotal role within the SMO, facilitating effective communication strategies to disseminate information, engage constituents, and promote the legislative agenda. This position requires adeptness in crafting compelling messages, coordinating media relations, and fostering public outreach initiatives. The Communications Specialist collaborates closely with policymakers and internal teams to ensure alignment with organizational objectives and maximize impact.

Strategic Communication Development:

· Under the direction of the Director of Communications, develop comprehensive communication plans aligned with legislative priorities.

· Craft persuasive messaging for press releases, talking points, speeches, newsletters, and social media platforms.

· Collaborate with policy team to translate complex legislative issues into accessible content for diverse audiences.

Media Relations:

· Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and key stakeholders.

· Serve as a primary point of contact for media inquiries as assigned by the Director of Communications, coordinating interviews, and managing press conferences.

· Monitor media coverage and provide timely responses to emerging issues.

Digital and Social Media Management:

· Assist in the creation of the legislative office's digital presence across various platforms.

· Assist in the development of engaging content for social media channels, including graphics, videos, and live streams.

· Monitor trends and analytics to optimize social media performance and audience engagement.

Collaboration and Coordination:

· Work closely with legislative staff to align communication efforts with policy objectives.

· Coordinate messaging and outreach efforts with external partners, advocacy groups, and stakeholders.

· Provide communication support for legislative initiatives, campaigns, and special projects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or related field.

· Demonstrated experience in strategic communication, media relations, and digital media management.

· Strong writing skills with the ability to craft clear, concise, and compelling content.

· Proficiency in social media platforms, content management systems, and digital analytics tools.

· Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

· Knowledge of legislative processes, government affairs, and public policy issues preferred.

· Flexibility to adapt to evolving priorities and deadlines.

Residency Law: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act,” which became effective September 1, 2011, all persons newly hired by the Executive Branch on or after that date shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
