Montgomery County Commissioner Neil Makhija is hiring a full-time Finance & Political Director. They will oversee all aspects of Makhija’s ongoing political efforts, including: spearhead all fundraising activity for the Commissioner, serve as the primary point of contact for all political engagement, and manage digital and press communications as needed.

This is a hybrid in-person/remote job, but the role must be based in the Greater Philadelphia region.

The ideal candidate will be ambitious, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and ready to thrive in a face-paced environment. This person will have excellent communications skills and be highly organized.

About The Principal:

Neil Makhija serves as Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and Chair of the Board of Elections. He is a two time Emmy winner, and the first Asian American County Commissioner in Pennsylvania’s history across all 67 counties. As Montgomery County Commissioner, Neil oversees the county’s 3,000 employees and a billion-dollar budget; Montgomery County is Philadelphia’s largest collar county of 868,000 people, more populous than four U.S. states.

Neil is a national leader on voting rights and election law. He previously taught election law at the University of Pennsylvania and served as the Executive Director of Indian American Impact, a national civic organization. Neil advised President Biden and Vice President Harris on voting rights and helped reshape Pennsylvania’s gerrymandered state house maps.

Qualifications:

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Self-motivated team player
  • A history of setting high goals and exceeding them
  • Minimum of 1 cycle of campaign work for Democratic campaigns (strong preference for experience in fundraising and/or based in southeastern Pennsylvania)
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Access to reliable transportation (and a valid driver’s license)
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours as needed
  • Proficiency with NGP VAN, ActBlue, Microsoft Office, Google Docs

Key Job Functions:

FINANCE

Develop and oversee the execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy including working with hosts to plan in-person events, managing call time (including research, preparation, and follow-up), and staffing the principal as needed at events.

Think and act creatively about how to expand the Commissioner’s donor network

Be thorough in following up with contacts from the Commissioner’s meetings

Staff the Commissioner at campaign meetings and events

Work with the compliance team to ensure that all fundraising is according to state laws

Work with the Commissioner’s official-side staff to schedule campaign-side events and meetings

Update and improve a finance plan

POLITICAL and COMMUNICATIONS

Support the Commissioner’s social media presence by capturing, developing, and posting content regularly

Draft copy for e-mail program including regular updates and fundraising messages

Staff the Commissioner as needed at political events

Attend political events on the Commissioner’s behalf as needed
