Position: Young Advocate (Policy Specialist) - Unpaid Internship Opportunity

At IPS we know that public health issues can inequitably impact our regions’ most vulnerable communities. Therefore, we strive to enact upstream prevention strategies to address the underlying issues that impact physical and mental health. Through a multi-faceted approach to achieving equity that includes media advocacy, community organizing, policy, and systems change, we can transform the communities we serve.

As a member of our Young Advocates program, you will create lasting change in communities by reducing alcohol-related harms and encouraging best practices that will support community health. The goal of the Binge and Underage Drinking Initiative (BUDI) is to address the harmful effects of underage and high-risk drinking behaviors by changing community policies, practices, and norms related to excessive alcohol consumption.

As a Young Advocate with a policy emphasis, you may engage in:

  • Helping to monitor locally proposed ordinances and state-proposed bills.
  • Helping to collaborate with other organizations regarding legislative priorities.
  • Assisting with drafting policy position statements and supporting materials.
  • Helping with analyzing the impact of proposed ordinances or bills on alcohol-related issues.
  • Assisting with advocating for upstream prevention measures to be implemented at the local and state level..

All our Advocates must go through a background check, drug test and interview before starting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a self-starter who can work independently.
  • Available for at least one semester/quarter.
  • Commit 10 hours per week.
  • Interest in state, local, national public health policy.
  • Capable of presenting on in person or virtually.
