This position is exempt from Civil Service and are "At Will" positions. They serve at the discretion of the hiring authority, subject to City of Portland Human Resources Administrative Rules and Portland City Charter and Code.

The Office of Mayor Ted Wheeler seeks a dedicated professional in the position of Communications and Social Media Coordinator (Commissioner's Staff Rep). The Communications and Social Media Coordinator will be part of the Mayor's Communications team under the direction of the Communications Director. The Communications and Social Media Coordinator will join a diverse team of talented, dedicated individuals who strive to make Portland a city everyone can love to live, work, and play. We are looking for an individual with a positive and enthusiastic attitude who wants to be part of that team. The successful candidate will have strong communication and copywriting skills, the ability to adapt quickly to rapidly changing circumstances, and the ability to show initiative and problem-solve.

The Communications and Social Media Coordinator will play a key role in the communications strategy for the Mayor's Office. The successful candidate will be an individual committed to transparency in government and making the work that we do in the City accessible and understandable to all those we serve. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who enjoys public service and working in a fast-paced environment.

The work requires adherence to City and Mayor's Office policies and procedures and the ability to accurately perform time-sensitive work. The successful candidate will be highly organized and motivated. We are looking for a candidate who can think on their feet and works well in stressful situations. Knowledge of the City of Portland and/or community is a plus.

The anticipated salary range for the this position is $60,000-$80,000.

About the Office

The Office of Mayor Ted Wheeler is a highly public-facing and dynamic environment. The Mayor and his administration work to better the lives of Portlanders by creating sound and equitable public policy, leading City bureaus and offices with accountability and transparency, and building public trust in local government. The Mayor is a member of City Council and oversees nine City offices and bureaus: the Portland Police Bureau, the Bureau of Emergency Management, the Office of Management and Finance, the Office of Equity and Human Rights, the Office of Government Relations, the City Attorney’s Office, the City Budget Office, Prosper Portland, and the Office of Violence Prevention. Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. Some employees are working from home full-time, while other roles cannot be filled in a remote status. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, or 3) revert to full-time at a city work location.

To Qualify

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their cover letter and résumé how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

Extensive writing and copy-editing experience.

Ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

Knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media venues and best practices.

Knowledge of social media Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and web traffic metrics.

Ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.

Experience with planning media events and/or press conferences.

Applicants Must Also Possess:

At least 2 years-experience with social media/brand creation.
