Position Summary:

Support NMHC federal legislative and regulatory activities through research, advocacy, and special projects. Assist governmental affairs staff on general issues. The ideal candidate is a driven, detail-oriented team member who is experienced and passionate about legislative and regulatory related projects. The position will be based in Washington, DC.

Position Reports to:

Vice President, Housing Policy and Government Affairs


Knowledge of legislative and regulatory policy and processes. Expertise in specific housing related legislative and regulatory issues a plus.


  • Perform independent work on assigned issues for NMHC advocacy efforts, monitor federal and other policy issues, and provide the results of that work in written articles, memoranda, or backgrounders.
  • Assist NMHC government affairs team in maintaining positive relationships with Hill and Executive branch staff, including communicating with Congressional and Executive staff.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the federal legislative process and procedure.
  • Monitor legislation, regulation, issues critical to NMHC, in general and specific to housing policy.
  • Assist government affairs team in preparation for hearings, markups and Executive Branch meetings and provide relevant reports and analysis.
  • Become familiar with the relevant NMHC website and resource material, maintain familiarity with industry-specific information and assist in the collection and maintenance of relevant materials and data.
  • Manage projects related to NMHC legislative and regulatory priorities.
  • Activities include working with consultants, organizing meetings and discussion groups, developing project work plans, primary and secondary research activities, including but not limited to analysis and review of secondary research and reports, collection of data and information from member and other organizations and other associated duties.
  • Assist in responding to member requests for information.
  • Assist in various special projects and provide both oral and written presentations of that work.
  • Collect, compile and field requests for industry research and data.
  • Attend meetings throughout Metropolitan Washington as necessary. Some travel and flexible hours may be required.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


  • B.A. or B.S. required. Preferred degree in Government, Policy, Real Estate, Business or Law. Prior trade association experience a plus.
  • Minimum two years of experience in government affairs, public affairs, or law or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office Suite programs and ability to perform Internet research required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences (e.g., colleagues, NMHC members, government contacts, service providers, etc.).
  • Ability to function as part of a team and work independently with appropriate supervision.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities assigned by multiple staff.
