Overview

Data2X, housed at the United Nations Foundation, is a collaborative technical and advocacy initiative dedicated to improving the quality, availability, and use of gender data to make a practical difference in the lives of women and girls worldwide. Motivated by the belief that "there is no gender equality without data equality," Data2X works with United Nations agencies, governments, civil society, academics, and the private sector to close gender data gaps, promote expanded and unbiased gender data collection, and use gender data to improve policies, strategies, and decision-making.

Working with Data2X’s Communications Director, the Communications Officer will support efforts to further Data2X’s mission to promote the centrality of gender data for development progress and gender equality. S/he is responsible for ensuring consistent on-message content across editorial and digital channels, as well as assisting with planning and executing events, and media relations.

Responsibilities

Write compelling blog posts, press releases and newsletter content, for Data2X website and other outlets.

Work with Data2X technical team and partnership managers to understand key aspects of each area of Data2X’s work and produce communications content around the goals of gender data broadly, and each of the partnerships.

Develop an e-outreach editorial calendar and execute outreach, including producing copy, sending via MailChimp, and maintaining Data2X distribution lists.

Proactively monitor and maintain Data2X’s Twitter channel with news copy and digital content, delivered in the right tone and in tune with the international news cycle, events, and related reports published in the field, and Data2X’s announcements and events.

Liaise with graphic designer and other external vendors to assist with production of Data2X collateral, including invitations, reports and fact sheets, digital graphics, videos, and more.

Maintain the news and resources sections of Data2X’s website; update website copy and other sections on an as-needed basis.

Identify, research, and develop a database of U.S. and international based journalists and bloggers, with interest or potential for interest in gender data.

Monitor media coverage of gender data-related content.

Draft press releases and op-eds; assist with pitching and placement of articles.

Copy-edit Data2X’s public facing documents – reports, official correspondence and newsletters – as needed.

Assist with engagement strategy at key UN and other moments: plan and execute events, including event concepts, speaker invitations, talking points for Senior Data2X staff, on-site logistics, liaising with speakers, live tweeting.

Represent Data2X within the UN Foundation’s Public Affairs Team; participate in weekly PA meetings and support broader institutional communications activities, as needed.

Selection Criteria

Bachelor's degree in public policy, communications, journalism, or international affairs, plus three to five years of relevant experience; Master’s degree preferred.

Impeccable writing, editing, and communications skills.

Creativity and enthusiasm for data and gender and the ability to translate complex technical material into simple messages.

Experience managing social media channels for an organization – writing in the “voice” of the organization, engaging with audiences professionally and proactively, and growing online communities.

Experience cultivating relationships with media; pitching and placing stories.

Experience with WordPress, MailChimp.

Experience with event planning and coordination; willingness to jump in and help.

Detail-oriented; team player, problem solver, relationship-builder.

Sense of humor; highly organized, delivers results in a fast-paced environment.

Willingness for occasional domestic and international travel.

Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.

Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.

International Experience or experience of working for a multilateral institution.

Content production skills including videography and photography with simple edits.
