Writing/Communications Internship

Internship Description

Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) seeks a Writing/Communications Intern to write blog posts and assist with the writing and production of Church & State magazine in its national office in Washington, D.C. The Writing/Communications Intern will report to the editor of Church & State and will produce blog posts, magazine articles, book reviews, and other writing duties as assigned. Must be able to meet a daily deadline. The intern will also assist with proofreading duties.

The strongest candidates will be able to demonstrate a commitment to the separation of religion government; be responsible, hard-working, and excited to work with diverse staff and supporters; and have the following skills:

• Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills

• Familiarity with Associated Press style

• Ability to meet regular deadlines

• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Google Drive

The internship is 20 hours per week with a start date in June and a finish date in August. (Start and finish dates are flexible depending on the intern’s academic or other scheduling needs).

• A short writing sample (no more than 800 words) on any topic that has recently been in the news. The writing sample should take the form of a blog post.

Benefits

The Writing/Communications Intern will be paid a stipend of $4,000. Interns receive substantive experience with in-depth exposure to some of the most important issues facing the country. The Writing/Communications Intern will receive a regular byline on AU’s “Wall of Separation” blog (https://www.au.org/blogs) as well as bylines in AU’s membership magazine Church & State (https://www.au.org/church-state).

AU can provide documentation for academic credit upon successful conclusion of the internship.
