Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Sr. Manager Public Affairs! About the role
As the Sr. Public Affairs Manager you will join Symetra’s Public Affairs team to support Symetra’s local, state and federal policy and outreach strategy! This individual will assist the VP of Public Affairs and the Director of Public Affairs in identifying, researching, analyzing and advocating a variety of complex public policy issues in line with Symetra’s legislative and community priorities. You will engage in internal coordination across teams, outreach and coalition building, and will represent Symetra publicly at various levels of government, with trade organizations and in the community. Our ideal candidate has excellent writing, analytical and communication skills, strong judgment, is a natural collaborator and phenomenal teammate, is passionate about public policy and is excited to advance external government relationships.
What You’ll Do In This Role
- Identify, track and analyze key legislative and policy issues at the local, state and federal level.
- Develop briefing materials using multiple resources to advise leadership and produces legislative communications.
- Implement advocacy engagement strategy in coordination with leadership to drive outcomes defined within role.
- Develop and manages relationships with key constituencies and elected officials, business associations, institutions of higher education, and nonprofit partners.
- As a member of the lobbying team, influence industry and coalitions, the Washington state legislature and local government through proactive communication.
- Work in support and coordination with Symetra Law Department’s Legal and Regulatory team to advance Symetra priorities as directed, and assists in reporting and compliance activities.
- Coordinate and track Symetra Empowers Communities grants.
- Support community outreach functions by representing Symetra with external audiences, including public speaking at community events.
- Lead projects internally in support of programs and initiatives

Compensation
Salary Range: $100,300 - $167,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program.
Who You Are
- High School Diploma required
- Bachelor's Degree, preferably in communications, political science, public policy, public relations, financial services or related field.
- 7-9 years experience in communications, government relations, public affairs, public relations or financial services, or 3-5 years experience in state or federal government.
- Proven ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and make solid judgment decisions in the field as required to fulfill programmatic and engagement priorities.
- Solid grasp of governance and legislative processes and experience using from multiple sources to research and analyze sophisticated issues using database, spreadsheet and document software.
- Excellent verbal and written communications for internal and external audiences, including public speaking and presentation skills.
- Ability to identify, develop and maintain quality relationships with a wide variety of collaborators.
- Willing to travel.
- Must have reliable transportation.
