Background:


Compassion in World Farming was founded in 1967 by a British farmer who became horrified by the development of modern, intensive factory farming. We have since become the leading farm animal welfare charity and today we campaign peacefully to end all factory farming practices. In 2014 we established Compassion in World Farming Inc, our US branch.


The case around the need to change the way we eat, improve our health, tackle climate change and reverse biodiversity loss is compelling, and awareness is increasing all the time. To help us meet these challenges and to realize the massive opportunities that are out there, we are looking to recruit a Head of Campaigns to help lead the call for change across the US. They must be an ambitious and passionate leader, who shares our vision of a world where all factory farms are eliminated.


Requirements


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.


Lead public campaigns to drive change for farmed animals 40%


Strategic overview of US campaigns activities and plans, including detailed knowledge of the roll out of Global campaigns over the short, medium, and long term.


Develop new and inspiring public campaigns for Animal-Sourced Foods reduction and a moratorium on US factory farming.


Support the development of a UN mission for CIWF in NYC—led by our International Affairs department.


Ensure that Compassion’s campaigns engage and influence public opinion, as well as those who shape, make or fund public policy relating to farmed animal welfare.


Monitor and evaluate US campaigns work by tracking digital engagement metrics to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.


Work in collaboration with the Food Business Team to identify and develop public campaigning opportunities that drive corporate animal welfare improvements.


Work in coalition with other NGOs active in transformative farmed animal welfare.


Raise awareness and profile of Compassion USA 40%


Grow recognition of Compassion USA’s work, and the work of our global organization, through traditional press outreach and other external media opportunities. Overall responsibility for driving media activity and results, including press, TV, radio, social media, campaign stunts, and web news content.


Grow and engage the US supporter base through regular communication and opportunities for empowerment via email alerts, social media, website, and other digital tools.


Sign-off (or delegate) all public facing media materials including messaging, media releases, quotes, social media videos, etc.


Represent CIWF USA as appropriate in both strategic and high-profile forums.


Act as a media spokesperson where required.


Ensure that the Compassion brand and identity are in line with global standards and protocols across all our communications channels.


Line Management and Support 15%


Manage the US Campaigns Team to ensure performance objectives are met.


Coach and develop individuals in the team to increase their skills and experience.


Ensure the US lobbying work is aligned with and in support of the global advocacy program.


Work in collaboration with Global Headquarters in the UK 5%


Develop excellent relationships between the USA team and the functional teams at HQ, with strong communications and ways of working.


Develop appropriate campaign objectives for the USA team in support of the Global strategy, and proactively seek opportunities to collaborate with the global organization on campaigns, communications, branding and fundraising.


Work in collaboration with the Global Fundraising Team to engage supporters and donors in support of US fundraising goals.

Highly Desirable


  • Proven Ability, Qualifications & Training Demonstrable experience in a senior campaigning, communications or policy role. Strong strategic capacity. Effective team leadership. Experience advising senior management and CEO. Creating increased public awareness using digital campaigning tools. Creating campaign messaging and shaping complex ideas for public consumption. Track record of creating change through public campaigning. Experience working within or leading a coalition. Track record of working on animal welfare, food, or farming issues. Background in policy or social change
  • Skills, Knowledge & Attributes Excellent communication skills. Ability to develop and implement campaign strategies. Familiarity with the political/lobbying mechanisms in the USA. Ability to manage budgets. Capacity to work within a team to deliver organizational strategies. Good relationship-building skills. Strong leadership skills. Digital campaigning expertise. Good web development and marketing skills. Proven ability to manage concurrent projects simultaneously. Sensitivity to international social, cultural, and legal issues. Experience being a media spokesperson
