The Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs will Develop, resources, and implement an integrated corporate communication and community affair strategy to position USS during its business transformation and in support of its emerging, new business strategy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Aligns communication strategy and activities to enterprise objectives.

Creates a contemporary, proactive, reliable, timely, and accessible media relations and public communications practice.

Manages external communications and staff, including communicating the Company’s key competitive differentiators, coordinating communications with key external stakeholders and increases brand awareness.

Manages internal communications and change management communications and staff.

Manages executive communications (media training, presentation support, speech writing and delivery, individual communications coaching, etc.) and staff.

Oversees the integration and maximizes the impact of all communications channels: owned (in-house media channels), earned (news coverage generated by active editorial outreach), paid (paid advertising or brand exposure), and shared (maximizing content created for one channel by leveraging it across multiple channels).

Develops, manages, and executes crisis communications strategy (strategy, team development, crisis simulation drills and training, day-to-day readiness).

Develops, manages, and executes corporate and plant community relations communications strategy (including alignment to business strategy and values, financial contributions, employee involvement, leadership involvement).

Develops, manages, and executes branding strategy and corporate positioning (image and issues advertising, editorial positioning, marketing communications collateral support, special publications sustainability report [regulatory issues, community, safety, environment, diversity & inclusion, etc.)

Collaborates with internal partners on effectively communicating key regulatory, public policy and industry-wide issues and activities.

Develops, and motivates a lean, efficient and effective team of highly skilled internal and external resources to execute on the objectives and implementation plans outlined in the corporate communications strategy.

Identifies emerging communications skills, knowledge and capability, and ensures the department staff possess required capabilities.

Works closely with executive management to ensure high level of executive engagement and buy-in for the communications strategy and its implementation.

Serves as the senior communications coach to executive management to ensure relevant and timely positioning message development, and message delivery. Assists executive management in an acceleration of effective communications practices and skills to support the Company’s transition to a high performance organization, with an emphasis on creating a culture of open, transparent business communications with employees.

Manages both internal and external social media, and leads the transformation of technology-assisted communications vehicles and platforms within the Company to support timely, relevant, efficient, and effective communication.

Serves as a role model within the organization of Leading High Performing Teams, Leading Change, Communicating Effectively, Delivering Results and Customer Excellence, and living the Company’s values and principles.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism, Marketing, or a closely related field; Master’s Degree preferred.

At least 15 years of related experience necessary to serve as a strategic thought leader on development and execution of strategic communication initiatives

Experience in a Government or Government Affairs Communications function

Outcome, results, and accountability oriented

Strong complex project management skills

Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Demonstrated ability to collaborate and partner including building and sustaining influential relations with executives, media, community leaders, and other key stakeholders

Ability to manage multiple, high priority projects within deadlines
