Summary of Principal Responsibilities

In the United States AFSC works to educate audiences about Israel and Palestine and to advocate for a change in government policies and corporate/institutional practices that support inequality and the ongoing Israeli military occupation. AFSC supports the implementation of international humanitarian and human rights law, promotes implementation of Palestinian refugees’ right of return, and calls for full equality between Palestinians and Israelis.

The Program Coordinator will join the Program Director to support national AFSC campaigns, webinars, speaking tours and public events that focus on Gaza. They will assist AFSC in connecting with Palestinians from Gaza as they create outreach and educational materials including online events, blogposts, media advisories, and social media content. They will organize outreach to key constituencies and mobilize and engage U.S. audiences in furthering their knowledge and activism about Palestine and specifically on the history, impact of blockade, and military aggressions against Gaza.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Assist the National Director of the U.S. Palestine Activism Program in amplifying the voices of Palestinians from Gaza to further Palestinian rights and solidarity.
  • Strengthen and develop relationships with Palestinians from Gaza, including in the Palestinian community in the United States. Build partnerships with allied groups by organizing public events, workshops, and advocacy opportunities.
  • Analyze information from the press, congressional hearings, coalition meetings, and other sources in conjunction with AFSC on-the-ground experience to help develop educational efforts and advocacy strategies as it relates to Palestine for the organization.
  • Under the direction of the National Program Director, work with AFSC staff in Palestine, the Office of Public Policy and Affairs, the Action Center for Corporate Accountability, and regional peace programs to develop coordinated approaches to program work, including educational projects and advocacy efforts that build intersectional approaches.
  • Write program communications including updating online resources, writing and developing outreach tools to broaden the program audience, creating social media posts, and responding to requests for information.
  • Participate in staff meetings, national planning meetings, and program committee meetings.
  • Represent the Palestine Activism Program for internal AFSC meetings and external coalitions in consultation with the Director.
  • Recruit and work with volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree with expertise in Middle East politics, social science, history and related fields preferred or equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree. Master’s degree is a plus, but not required.

Experience:

  • Fluency in Arabic and English with both written and verbal communication.
  • Minimum of three years social justice organizing experience required. Organizing on issues related to Palestine (including Gaza), preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
  • Experience translating between Arabic and English, desired.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing public events in the U.S. context.
  • Deep knowledge of Palestinian history (including Gaza) and U.S. policy.
  • Experience working with people of all ages, including youth.
  • Experience and ability to oversee and manage multiple projects.

Other Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and communicate during traditional work hours across all US time zones.
  • Ability to work independently and also work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgment and creativity in advancing AFSC perspectives with multiple constituencies including human rights advocates, students, and faith communities.
  • Ability to work positively and effectively with diverse staff, partners, and program constituencies.
  • Ease in navigating all standard computer applications and web-based communications and research methods.

Compensation: Salary – Program Coordinator I ($55,961 - $77,740) – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
