The Major Gifts Officer (also known as Director of Development, to external audiences) reports to the Senior Associate Director of Operations of the Institute of Politics and Global Affairs (IOPGA) within the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs at Cornell University, has a strong functional report to the Director of the IOPGA and is an indirect report to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts. This position serves as the development officer for the IOPGA and will work in partnership with the faculty advisor for the IOPGA in Ithaca and with the Director of Development for the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs.

In close collaboration with the Senior Associate Director of Operations, and the Director of Development for the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, the Major Gifts officer will develop and implement the Institute’s outreach strategy through audience identification, thoughtful print and digital direct marketing, creative and effective event planning, and program implementation in order to raise the IOPGA’s profile with perspective donors. This position will identify and pursue grant opportunities from granting agencies and foundations, including conceptualizing proposals and writing applications, where necessary.

This position requires some travel to the Ithaca campus.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 3 to 5 years of experience in development, alumni affairs, public affairs, marketing, and/or business development, or equivalent combination

A proven collaborator with a demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships

bility to appropriately handle highly confidential and sensitive information, and the ability to exercise sound judgment, tact and discretion

Experience working with volunteers

Excellent communication and presentation skills, and the ability to speak credibly about higher education, global affairs, and the current political environment, and ability to interact effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in History, Political Science, International Relations or related field

Experience with international NGOs and Foundations, with a particular focus on communications, programs, government relations, and development
