Overview

The government affairs specialist, a new position, works with the director and associate director of Government Affairs in Washington, D.C., and other Princeton staff to develop and promote the University’s advocacy agenda in the federal government.

Responsibilities

Assistance in Advocacy Efforts:

Develops handouts for members of Congress and their staff on areas of University research advocacy.

Assists with developing graphic presentations such as large posters to be used in advocacy presentations.

Assists with the preparation of background memos and materials, and other duties supporting University faculty, researchers and others who participate in advocacy days in Washington.

Research:

Researches legislative issues in which the University takes a leadership role (e.g. immigration, increasing socioeconomic diversity and access to higher education, the importance of higher education, etc.)

Performs analysis of the federal budget, appropriations bills and other activities that have a bearing on the University’s mission and operations.

Creates white papers and other handouts on fusion energy and other top-priority University research initiatives.

Communication with key constituencies:

Attends community briefings and legislative hearings, prepares summaries and memoranda where appropriate for Government Affairs colleagues and campus partners.

Investigates new developments at key research agencies and prepare reports for Government Affairs colleagues and campus partners.

Distributes campus and research news to key Capitol Hill constituencies.

Creates PowerPoint presentations for meetings on campus and elsewhere.

Coordinates with campus partners on messaging on Twitter and other social media channels in connection with advocacy days and other key University events.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

At least one year of experience researching, writing or both in a government office, university, advocacy group or news organization.

Excellent attention to detail.

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in an environment with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Moderate to advanced skills using PowerPoint, PhotoShop or equivalent presentation and photo/graphic editing software.

Strong interest in public policy and government.

Preferred qualifications:

Knowledge of and familiarity with higher education and Princeton University.

Familiarity with scientific research.

Experience working in or reporting on federal, state or local government.
