POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Managing Director, Gov’t. Relations for Federal Affairs, the Manager of Government Relations for Federal Affairs is responsible for implementing and carrying out NSSF government relations objectives with primary responsibility for federal legislative matters. Position hybrid, based in Washington, DC at NSSF Government Relations Office.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Track and monitor federal legislation and regulations impacting firearms, ammunition, hunting and the shootings sports industry. Prepare analysis of bills and proposed regulations.
- Represent the interests of NSSF before Congress (House and Senate).
- Build and maintain strong relationships with congressional staff.
- Draft and prepare correspondence to Congress on legislation, research and draft position/issue papers, letters, and/or testimony in support or opposition to state legislation/regulations.
- Draft legislative alerts on federal legislative matters.
- Assist in updating and keeping current NSSF Government Relations Web page.
- Attend, monitor and report on congressional hearings.
- Assist in NSSF PAC administration and fundraising including attend political fundraising events on behalf of NSSF PAC.
- Liaison with and represent NSSF interests to partner/allied organizations and groups based in Washington, DC.
- Coordinate activities with NSSF contract federal lobbyists and advisors.
- Contribute content for NSSF publications, e.g., Government Relations Update, Bullet Points, Import/Export Newsletter, and NSSF blogs.
- Assist in organizing and preparing briefing materials for annual NSSF Congressional Fly In, both attendee materials and “leave behind” information packets for Congressional offices.
- Assist in preparation and filing of lobbying disclosure reports.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of three (3) years of government relations experience. Prior congressional staff experience strongly preferred.
- Senate experience preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience staffing firearms public policy and conservation issues a strong plus.
- Superior knowledge and understanding of federal legislative procedures.
- B.A. or B.S. required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent legislative research skills.
- Must be able a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic and track record of working independently but also must be capable of working as part of a team.
- Proficiency with current Microsoft Windows applications and MS office suite products, e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
- Familiarity with the hunting and shooting sports preferred but not essential.
- Some travel required.
Work Location: Hybrid/DC Office
New hire annual compensation: $75,000 - $100,000
