Job Description

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the nation’s largest public housing agency, owns and manages over 176,000 apartments in 326 developments across the City’s five boroughs. In addition, 204,000 residents receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program.

Position Summary & Primary Responsibilities

Lead NYCHA’s Department of Communications, a team including digital communications, earned media, crisis communications, events, translation services, photography, and stakeholder communications. Reporting directly to NYCHA’s Executive Vice President for External Affairs, the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) is responsible for information dissemination to the media, residents, employees, elected officials and the general public; develop and lead the implementation of public service and information campaigns to advance NYCHA’s mission and goals; and serve as a member of NYCHA’s Executive Cabinet.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Develop and execute a strategic communications plan for the Authority.

• Lead a staff of communications professionals.

• Serve as NYCHA’s senior advisor on communications both internal and external, and participate in the formulation of communications policy.

• Develop and disseminate informational and educational materials for NYCHA residents, employees and the general public.

• Prepare communications on NYCHA’s new policies, initiatives, and programs. This can include testimony, letters, backgrounders, flyers, and emails.

• Organize events to increase awareness around various NYCHA programs.

• Manage proactive media outreach and reactive.

• Ensure all NYCHA collateral – including internal and external Powerpoints, flyers, fact sheets, and one-pagers, are consistent with NYCHA’s brand.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in public relations, journalism, promotion, advertising or other closely related fields; or

2. A satisfactory equivalent.

Preferred Skills

• A minimum of 7 years of full time satisfactory professional experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, communications or a related field

• Fluency in applications such as Word and PowerPoint

• Experience using social media tools – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc..
