Summary
This position is located in the United States Department of Education, Office of Communications and
Outreach (OCO). The Office of Communications and Outreach is responsible for overall leadership for
the Department in its communications and outreach activities. These activities are designed to engage
the general public, including a wide variety of education, community, business, parent, student, and other
organizations, in the U.S. Department of Education’s mission.

As a Public Affairs Specialist, GS-1035-09, you will be responsible for:
• Editing and developing written materials which transmit information concerning the nature and purpose of agency programs, projects and timely items of concern to the general public or more specialized audiences.
• Assisting in the monitoring and sharing of national and regional issues to inform communication and outreach planning.
• Using communications technology to prepare, track, and report communications activities.
• Developing and recommending approaches and drafts of material for approval by the supervisor.
• Applying program regulations and guiding to work assignments with close supervision.
• Researching trends in both communication strategy and education to maintain agency currency and relevance with communications efforts and strategies.
As a Public Affairs Specialist, GS-1035-11, you will be responsible for:
• Editing, developing, and disseminating written materials for various audiences concerning
the nature and purpose of agency programs, including information tailored to more specialized audiences.
• Identifying, planning and executing information campaigns that disseminate results of successful projects in stimulating adoption of their results by stakeholders.
• Developing and presenting materials for external audiences. Assists in the monitoring and sharing of national and regional issues to inform communication and outreach planning.
• Providing assistance to resolve emerging problems. Developing plans for informing and involving the public on issues of national significance.
• Using communications technologies to prepare, track, and report communications activities.
• Working cooperatively as part of a team in the development and execution of comprehensive public information campaigns designed to keep the public and the education community informed about the status, effectiveness and accomplishments of the Department of Education’s major school improvement initiatives.
• Applying program regulations and guides to work assignments, requiring some analytical and interpretive ability in order to begin taking on assignments without close supervision.
• Conducting outreach to program offices to maintain ongoing efficient dissemination of information to the public. Utilizing internal systems and procedures for efficient operations that include content review prior to dissemination.
