The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is seeking a Manager, Public Affairs to join its Government Relations department. NMMA is the leading trade association for the U.S. and Canadian recreational boating industry (nmma.org), the primary advocate for the boating business community and boating consumer, and the leading producer of consumer boat shows in the United States. NMMA represents 85% of the U.S. and Canadian recreational marine manufacturing market including companies that make boats, marine engines and accessories. Position Description:
The NMMA is seeking a curious, passionate, and experienced Manager, Public Affairs to join our dedicated team in the D.C. headquarter office (hybrid or remote).
This position will report to the Director of Public Affairs and will play an integral role in shaping the association’s public affairs efforts and communications strategies across the D.C. region and beyond. This position will work closely with the NMMA Government Relations (GR) team to educate Congress and state policymakers about issues that impact the marine industry and to educate NMMA members about government decisions that impact their business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Elevate NMMA’s online presence through the strategic expansion of NMMA’s digital footprint across social media platforms and business-to-business (B2B) website to enhance advocacy communications.
· Work alongside NMMA’s Director of Corporate Communications to enhance the association’s B2B social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
o Includes content creation that amplifies the NMMA’s policy priorities and engages with the right stakeholders (congress, federal and state agencies, the Administration, media, etc.).
o Manage a consistent reporting process on behalf of the association’s advocacy related digital communications efforts.
· Update the association’s B2B website, www.nmma.org, to best reflect the organization’s policy priorities and successes and ensure advocacy sections are kept current.
· Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team to prepare for a website refresh and rebrand.
· Manage the association’s industry grassroots advocacy hub, www.BoatingUnited.org, including:
o Website design, maintenance and upkeep.
o Work alongside the federal and state teams to draft action alerts and stakeholder communications.
o Manage stakeholder database within the platform (Spark Influence).
o Communicate and report out on action alert activity and communications to the larger GR team.
Assist the Director of Public Affairs in the development and implementation of messaging, communications, and public affairs strategies to promote NMMA’s policy priorities and agenda at every level of government.
· Work alongside the Director to develop and strengthen the association’s public affairs and communications operations, alongside external association partners and consultants.
o Participate in strategic conversations and weekly meetings with consultants surrounding big issue campaigns and public affairs needs.
o Ensure public affairs and communications goals are met and assist in overseeing the proper execution of state and federal public affairs campaigns.
o Work alongside the GR team to ensure a cohesive communications strategy is maintained among the association’s outdoor recreation industry partners.
o Draft, edit, and share messaging and talking points across the NMMA’s GR and MarComm teams, to ensure a consistent voice and tone surround public policy issues and priorities.
· Develop newsworthy, relevant content on behalf of the association’s GR team for inclusion in the NMMA’s daily newsletter circulated to 10,000+ industry stakeholders, Hill offices, media, and more.
· Draft press releases, op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, messaging/talking points, action alerts, and newsletters.
o Includes content creation on behalf of the associations many external facing platforms, including but not limited to newsletters, e-mail communications, grassroots platform, and www.nmma.org
· Act as day-to-day lead between GR team and internal Creative department on external facing advocacy collateral, including social cards, issue one-pagers, white papers, and more.
· Coordinate with internal or external stakeholders for events, including but not limited to press events, Capitol Hill receptions, briefings, roundtables, and/or industry-related receptions.
Position Requirements
- Knowledge and interest in public policy and grassroots strategies.
· Proven understanding of Government Relations and how Public Affairs and advocacy related communications complement and advance policy objectives and priorities.
· Exceptional presentation and communication skills along with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, including to executives.
· Ability to learn new concepts quickly and possess a service-oriented, curious attitude.
· In-depth knowledge of social media platforms, including paid strategies and political advertising requirements and limitations.
· Familiarity with Sprout Social and Spark Influence a plus, but not required.
· Familiarity with boating and outdoor recreation.
Credentials/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, public relations, and/or journalism, or related field.
- At least two to four years experience with congress, on political campaigns or in a public affairs or public relations agency preferred, but not required.
