Director of Communications Duties and Responsibilities
A Director of Communications is responsible for developing effective messaging and communication strategies. They must create or oversee the creation of promotional and informative materials the D7 office will send to the public. They might also be involved with internal company communications. They’ll work with all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video, and more. Other job duties include Primary Accountability:
The Director of Communications will develop the strategy for all communications, website, and public relations messages to consistently articulate Councilor Anderson’s mission. The Director of Communications will work closely with the Senior Leader Team within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.

Title: Director of Communications
Job Classification: Councilor Staff, Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, Accessible by phone/email/text on some nights and weekends.
Reporting Structure: Chief of Staff
Major Duties:
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the D7 office communications plan in collaboration with the Chief of Staff.
- Generates content including but not limited to external communication including newsletters, news briefs, website, and social media platforms.
- Puts communication vehicles (Emails, Robo Calls, etc.) in place to create awareness with the communities regarding the D7 office’s quality initiatives and legislative initiatives.
- Identifies challenges and emerging issues faced by the members. Works with the Chief of Staff to recognize internal and external communication opportunities, and defines and executes appropriate strategies to support them.
- Manages development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic materials including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, coalition reports, and annual reports.
- Responsible for editing all D7 Office written material, focusing on quality and content.
- Responds to requests for information release from the media or designates a source of information.
- Responds (Drafts) to all Councilor’s emails
- Manages Councilor’s Schedule
- Preparing and editing organizational publications, including newsletters or stockholders' reports, and work summaries for internal and external audiences.
- Other Responsibilities:
- Responding to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally, Attending speaking engagements and hosting special events or press conferences when asked, Making sure all office materials have consistent and positive messaging and branding, Conducting quality control on all communications, Managing a team of civic engagement communications interns if needed, Developing relationships and working with media outlets
- Prepares, edits, and summarizes reports, memos, and correspondence.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field ensures excellent writing and editing skills that conform to a nationally-accepted journalistic style.
- Three or more years of experience in communications or public relations demonstrating writing and editing experience covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and external facing communications, with experience in health care or non-profit preferred.
- Experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
- Ability to create and work within a yearly, quarterly and project budget.
- The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the appropriate audiences through the best communication channels.
- Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new ideas and initiatives.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbal, in a professional manner that supports the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the D7 office and community stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize, and the ability to coordinate multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in team settings to show flexibility and versatility.
- Ability to learn additional software applications.
- Ability to self-motivate and thrive in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work with strict confidentiality requirements, as well as utilize good judgment in the preparation and distribution of confidential information.
- Ability to run PR campaigns that deliver measurable results and meet objectives.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach and use hands and fingers for extended periods of time.
- Performing physical activities which require considerable use of your arms and legs for moving your entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Ability to read computer screens, mail, e-mail and talk on the phone.
- Ability to unpack and move supplies up to thirty (30) pounds.
- Ability to drive an automobile and possess a valid driver’s license.

Mon - Fri. 9am to 3pm
30 min lunch
* Schedule: Mon - Fri, 9a to 5p | Sat, Sun, and Evenings. Flexible as needed
Comp-time to compensate for extended work schedules
2 week Vacation
Benefits: Health, Free Eye and Dental
Pay: $32K - $40 per year
