Overview

 

The National Grocers Association (NGA) is the national trade association for America’s 21,500 independent community grocers. NGA members include retail and wholesale grocers located in every congressional district across the country, as well as state grocers’ associations, manufacturers, and service suppliers.

 

The NGA Government Relations (GR) team manages government relations, political activities, member casework, and more. We exclusively lobby on federal issues across a range of policies, including food, nutrition, antitrust, payments, labor and employment, tax, privacy, pharmacy, among others.

 

Position Summary

 

NGA is searching for an energetic and ambitious individual to monitor and analyze grocery related legislative and regulatory activities, participate in industry coalitions, lobby on NGA federal issue priorities, develop communications for the GR team, and participate in organizational event planning and execution. This is a junior GR position with opportunities for growth at NGA. The ideal candidate has experience in business issues policy. Title and pay will be based on experience. The manager will report to NGA’s VP of Government Relations. This position is in-person in Washington, DC with an optional hybrid schedule.

 

Responsibilities

 

Government Relations

  • Write bill and regulation analysis for internal use and for members
  • Track, monitor, analyze, and manage legislative and regulatory policy for business issues like antitrust, labor and employment, pensions, tax, payments, sustainability, trade, supply chains, privacy, and other policy issues as assigned
  • Represent NGA and our members in coalitions and industry meetings
  • Advocate NGA’s policy priorities before Congress and the executive branch and develop strategic engagement for NGA member companies
  • Meet fundraising targets for advocacy fund
  • Draft testimony, comments, issue papers, issue briefs, etc.
  • Complete other projects and tasks as assigned
  • Work with consultants to engage specific members, refine strategy, and complete projects


Administrative

  • Manage GR Committee Meetings
  • Execute logistics for GR team at NGA and industry events
  • Develop business policy positions and strategy ideas
  • Complete other administrative projects and tasks as assigned


Communications

  • Write weekly policy newsletter
  • Write daily policy updates for members as needed

                                                                                

Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • 1-2 years of Hill experience
  • Experience with tax, labor, and general business community policy issues or other food retail-related issues
  • Strong critical thinking skills and eagerness to proactively address team needs
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Passion for learning and growing professionally
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage on simultaneous projects
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  • Team player with proven ability to collaborate on other projects
  • Demonstrable strategic acumen in solving policy challenges
  • Bachelor’s degree required
