The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) is to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and advocacy. From college students to young stars, from working professionals to celebrated masters, we present quality jazz for an ever-increasing audience in an unprecedented range of activities and a variety of venues. The Membership Manager is responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive membership program directly driving strategies to acquire, re-engage and retain members and donors. The candidate will oversee the annual individual membership (Friends of Jazz) online/direct mail goals. As a member of the Individual Giving Team, this individual will collaborate and support the administration of the upper-level annual donor programs – the Patron’s Program, Chairman’s Circle, and Individual Giving as well as the Friends of Jazz members. The incumbent will oversee the strategy, development, marketing, and management of the programs. This includes strategies for upgrades, re-engagement, renewals, retention, and acquisition. The incumbent raises this annual operating support for Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) via direct mail, telemarketing, and online efforts, and is also responsible for the segmentation, data entry, fulfillment, and acknowledgement of these gifts. An ideal candidate should be a motivated self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills, a keen eye for details, and strong organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop compelling programs, events, and campaigns to increase membership and retention rates.
- Develop and implement direct response strategies to attract, retain, steward and upgrade JALC donors/subscribers/prospects through new donor acquisition, renewal, reinstatement, special appeals, and acknowledgement efforts.
- Oversee digital fundraising on JALC’s website and email marketing and social media platforms, in collaboration with the Public Relations and External Communications and Marketing Teams. This includes targeted annual campaigns and special opportunities.
- Develop new fundraising activities to increase net online revenue, number of donors secured through online sources, and number of gifts per donor.
- Cultivate relationships with Friend-level donors.
- Support overall efforts and provide a comprehensive management strategy. Collaborate with Individual Giving Team – Patron’s Program, Chairman’s Circle, Principal Gifts.
- Create and monitor annual budget of revenue and expenses in concert with Director, Individual Giving.
- Act as primary institutional stakeholder for all issues relating to individual membership.
- Create, write and implement specific membership marketing strategies including direct mail acquisitions, on-site recruitment/promotion, brochures, print ads and online incentives.
- Produce all Membership-related correspondence in a timely fashion allowing time for input/recommendations from Individual Giving Team.
- Generate and manage annual membership communications calendar.
- Supervise interns and volunteers assigned to Friends program.
- Provide solid back-office support for mailing list and database management, gift tracking and annual revenue analysis.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in membership, telefunding and/or direct mail required.
- Demonstrated track record of substantial program/revenue growth. Experience building or scaling programs.
- Ability to establish necessary rapport with members at all levels.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment across multiple programs and departments.
- Keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in fundraising software required. Experience in Tessitura preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a strong ability to work with internal/external stakeholders.
- Exceptional writing and analytical skills.
- Knowledge and appreciation of or keen interest in jazz.
- Must be available to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
