Job Description

A New York City Council Member is seeking a dynamic proactive Community Organizer and Events Coordinator for an immediate opening to drive and manage all aspects of the office’s community initiatives. The candidate will work closely with the Chief of Staff to effectively work with varied local communities in the district on grassroots efforts to organize neighbors, manage meetings and conduct workshops, and investigate trends and policy related matters that impact the district. As part of the Community Engagement team, the Community Organizer will identify key issues and implement campaigns and initiatives utilizing engagement and advocacy experience. We’re looking for candidates with a keen expertise in organizing people, curating events and cultivating events and programs that can bolster the Council Member’s presence in the Council District. In addition, the candidate must have solid writing skills, and proficiency of New York City and Borough wide politics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Oversee and execute all programs, initiatives, outreach activities and larger-scale events

·        Execute and organize strategies under direction of Chief of Staff and ensure alignment with the Council Member’s overall district vision

·        Identify key issues within the district and develop action plans for the Council Member and team to address in a timely manner

·        Serve as liaison to and synthesizes information from Constituent Services to create strategic plans addressing pervasive constituent issues

·        Work with constituents, community organizations, and elected officials offices to identify trends, community needs and creative solutions

·        Manage Participatory Budgeting campaign to recruit volunteers and assist stakeholders with developing ideas, content for appeals and coach participants

·        Track requests, documentation and agency responses to inquiries and handle sensitive information that requires attention from the Mayor office

·        Draft meeting memos, reports and other documents as needed

·        Assist with organizing press conferences, rallies and public events

·        Cultivate and maintain relationships with press, advocates and other potential stakeholders

·        Support with digital and email marketing for communicate announcements and agency deadlines  

·        Represent the Council Member at district wide meetings, including night and weekend events

·        Serve as a liaison with agencies, elected officials’ offices, community groups, and constituents

·        Other office duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Exceptional communication, listening, interpersonal and writing skills

·        Ability to write on a deadline, operate in a fast-paced environment and multi-task is a must

·        Highly organized and careful attention to detail with factual accuracy

·        A clear understanding and interest in local government, local advocacy, and city issues

·        Skills and motivation to interact effectively with diverse professional and cultural backgrounds

·        Experience with community engagement, grassroots organizing, or advocacy work

·        Experience working with diverse communities and include their contributions in an intentional and meaningful way

·        Self-starter with the ability to hit the ground running from day one

·        Creativity, strategic problem-solving and organizational skills

·        Flexibility and a positive, team-oriented attitude

·        Commitment to the core values of the Council Member’s platform

·        Experience with surveying data tools and digital organizing platforms a plus

·        Ability to work evenings and weekends

·        Bilingual/multilingual proficiency desired

·        Proficiency in word processing and Microsoft office and other computer applications


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

·        New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
