U.S. News empowers everyone to thrive. In the position of Public Health Reporter, you will be expected to report and write compelling news and feature stories, using data to spot trends and inform narratives.

This full-time position in our Healthiest Communities section requires news reporting and writing experience; the ability to identify, sort and manipulate in-house and third-party data sets; and a rigorous commitment to accuracy. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

You should be a self-starter who is comfortable working in a team environment. The ability to handle multiple short-term and longer-term assignments, while meeting tight deadlines, is key. You should be comfortable manipulating and analyzing complex data and describing the results in a way that is understandable to a general audience.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

You should be a self-starter who is comfortable working in a team environment. The ability to handle multiple short-term and longer-term assignments, while meeting tight deadlines, is key. You should be comfortable manipulating and analyzing complex data and describing the results in a way that is understandable to a general audience.

You Should Definitely Have:

Interest in public policy in the fields of public and community health, racial inequity and the social determinants of health.

Strong research, reporting, writing and analytical skills.

Experience assembling and distilling data from multiple sources.

Familiarity with Excel and database tools.

3 + years of professional news and public health reporting and writing experience, preferably in an online news environment.

Familiarity with public health infrastructure, including federal agencies such as the CDC, CMS and SAMHSA; county health departments; and community agencies and nonprofits.

Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

Ability to work on multiple stories simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.

Strong understanding of SEO.

Familiarity with content management systems, web production and social media.

Experience with data visualization tools and software.

College degree or equivalent.
