Job Summary

The Senior Media Relations Officer is responsible for managing, developing and implementing effective media relations and communications strategies for Harvard University as a member of the Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) team.
Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Media Relations and Communications, the Senior Media Relations Officer is a primary member of the central administration communications team, responsible for helping advance and support a broad portfolio of priorities, initiatives and programs across the central administration of Harvard University, and in close coordination with Harvard’s schools.

Position Description


  • Manage, develop and implement proactive and reactive media relations strategies to advance key university priorities, initiatives and issues, working collaboratively with HPAC colleagues, as well as communications teams across Harvard’s schools, affiliates and centers.
  • Support and collaborate on media relations and communications aspects of issues and crisis management related to university and central administration priorities and units, including coordinating and collaborating with colleagues to implement comprehensive and effective strategies around what are often complex academic and operational matters.
  • Develop strategic media relations and communications plans that consistently reflect Harvard’s messaging priorities, including storytelling through Harvard community channels, as well as top-tier mainstream, online, and specialty media outlets, to achieve the strategic goals of the university.
  • Provide strategic guidance for media relations colleagues, as well as colleagues responsible for content creation and management, within HPAC to achieve communications goals for both proactive strategies and responsive, issues-focused or program-related inquiries.
  • Produce public statements, talking points, FAQs, interview/issue briefings, press releases and internal community messages, in support of university priorities and activities, as well as written content for deployment across a variety of channels, including news and feature stories, Q&As with leadership.
  • Represent HPAC on various cross-university/cross-central administration committees, working groups, task forces, etc., charged with advising and leading communications planning and strategy around priority topics or initiatives.
  • Analyze and assess the effectiveness of different communications strategies and mechanisms to inform decision making around ongoing or future priorities, initiatives or campaigns.
  • Given the nature of the 24/7 news and issues cycle, this role requires availability outside of traditional work hours.
  • Other duties as assigned and relevant to executing work within the general scope of the role.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Minimum five (5) years of experience and proven success in media relations and communications work related to highly sensitive information in a fast-paced, complex environment with many stakeholders.
  • Strong written communications skills, including experience producing news and feature content for deployment across various digital and print channels.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experienced communications professional with a demonstrated capacity for multi-tasking, with good political judgment, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in higher education, non-profit, government, or a decentralized organization desired.
  • Ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, with experience effectively advising senior leaders.
  • The position requires an extremely high level of professionalism, discretion, sound and mature judgment, and collegiality.
  • Proven success in developing collaborative relationships across diverse constituencies.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex, decentralized environment.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
