Social Media Specialist
The United Federation of Teachers, representing 200,000 New York City public school educators and other professionals, seeks a social media specialist who has a demonstrated interest in public education, social justice and the labor movement. The social media specialist, under the supervision of the Communications Department director and deputy director, will be part of a two-person team managing the UFT’s presence across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Bluesky, X and Threads.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts.
- Three-plus years of experience as a social media content coordinator or related position.
- Experience and proficiency in all social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook, Threads, Bluesky and LinkedIn).
- Excellent writing skills with careful attention to grammar, spelling and house style.
- Proven ability to create compelling social media posts that generate positive engagement and build trust and awareness.
- Experience covering live events (for Instagram stories, microblogging).
- Knowledge of New York City public education and/or the labor movement. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a public school, a labor union or a progressive nonprofit.
- Able to establish an organization’s message, point of view and identity in social media posts.
- Able to create compelling graphics and videos using Canva or other mobile apps.
- Attention to detail and ability to juggle tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
Responsibilities
- Create social media content that engages members, supports campaigns and amplifies union priorities.
- Use Sprout Social to tag and schedule content and produce analytic reports that can inform social media strategy.
- Coordinate, monitor and support the work of the UFT satellite accounts using Sprout Advocacy.
- Develop content to advance issue-oriented campaigns and promote union events.
- Help manage the social media content calendar for perennial posts.
- Monitor, respond to and manage comments on social media platforms in a manner consistent with organizational policy.
- Cultivate partnerships with internal stakeholders, influencers and allied organizations to expand the reach and impact of the union’s campaigns and initiatives.
- Collaborate with and guide colleagues who can support the union’s social media strategy.
Job Requirements
- Report to the union’s Manhattan headquarters at least three days a week.
- Work remotely on evenings and weekends to complete time-sensitive tasks that cannot be scheduled in advance.
- Cover important evening or weekend events in person in exchange for comp time.
Pay and benefits
$75,000-$85,000, depending on experience. A defined-benefit pension, premium-free health care and other excellent medical benefits. Equal opportunity employer.
