Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and analytical Legislative Specialist to support legislative tracking, policy analysis, and research initiatives related to forensic DNA and criminal justice matters. This position is pivotal in shaping policy strategies through timely, accurate, and actionable legislative intelligence. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in legislative or judicial environments and a strong understanding of the intersection between policy, law enforcement, and forensic science.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct legislative and policy research on issues affecting forensic DNA, public safety, and criminal justice at both the state and federal levels.
- Monitor and analyze proposed/enacted legislation and judicial rulings with potential impact on forensic programs.
- Prepare policy briefs, legislative summaries, and impact assessments for internal leadership and partners.
- Collaborate with legal, scientific, and operational stakeholders to align policy developments with program goals.
- Deliver clear and concise reports, briefings, and presentations for executive-level decision-makers.
- Maintain well-organized documentation using SharePoint and Microsoft Office tools.
- Assist with responses to legislative inquiries, audits, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in judicial or legislative environments.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience conducting legislative research, preferably within criminal justice or forensic science.
- 3+ years of experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.
- Exceptional writing, research, and verbal communication skills.
- Active Top Secret Clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with forensic DNA programs and their law enforcement applications.
- Experience working with government or law enforcement stakeholders on legislative or regulatory issues.
- Ability to interpret and synthesize complex legislative information into actionable recommendations.
