Job Summary

The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks an experienced, dynamic, and passionate Program Director to play a crucial role in leading the development of a broad, strategic portfolio of programs for the center’s Institute for Rebooting Social Media. Based at the Berkman Klein Center, the Institute is a three-year “pop-up” research initiative to accelerate progress towards addressing social media’s most urgent problems, including misinformation, privacy breaches, harassment, and content governance. By convening participants across industry, government, civil society, and academia in focused, timebound collaboration, the Institute will build a portfolio of research, projects, programming, and educational opportunities. Working with faculty Directors and Center leadership, the role will determine key modes of engaging experts and the public through innovative programs. This will include leading collaborations to design and execute a range of workshops, creative events, fellowships, and working groups to make progress on substantive questions and contribute to improving the state of the digital social space.

Position Description

As a Program Director, you will:

  • Provide diplomatic, grounded leadership for a complex participatory Institute, with a highly networked and engaged community.
  • Represent the Institute’s programming and research in public and private events to various stakeholders, including academics, members of civil society, industry professionals, policymakers, and funders.
  • Conceptualize, shape, and lead strategic development of a broad portfolio of programs for the new Institute for Rebooting Social Media.
  • Direct and oversee day-to-day implementation of a portfolio for the Institute for Rebooting Social Media, including workshops, fellowships, events, and working groups that draw in participants from across sectors and disciplines.
  • Manage workflow for the programs team, including BKC staff and contractors, as well as collaborations with additional partners, participants, faculty, and advisors. This includes directly supervising at least one full-time position, determining needs, managing communication flows, and assigning tasks across the Institute’s program team.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships that foster collaborative research efforts, outreach campaigns, and fundraising opportunities, as well as the collaboration with Institute staff and participants, BKC administration and community, other Harvard stakeholders, and external partners to achieve the Institute's goals.
  • Interact directly with funders to develop and maintain relationships, write grant proposals, reports, and related materials as needed;
  • Contribute to research, public writing, and shaping of Institute’s research questions; &
  • Contribute to organizational planning of broader Center’s educational programs as needed, and ensure Institute’s programs connects to Center’s wider portfolio.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. 8+ years of progressive experience, as well as supervisory experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who are/have:

  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and oral communication skills;
  • Experience conducting or managing substantive research and organizational work in academic institutions, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and/or non-profits;
  • An established history of building and managing high performing teams, supporting staff with creative and effective leadership;
  • Existing connections, participation, and affiliations within broader public interest technology networks, including scholarly, civil, and public policy networks;
  • Initiative to drive the programmatic agenda of the new Institute, connect successfully with the research team, and build productive and encouraging relationships, particularly with program staff and students;
  • The flexibility to work both independently and within teams;
  • A desire to work for dynamic, mission-driven organization

Additional Information

As with all Berkman Klein Center positions, this is a term appointment currently expected to extend to June 30, 2023 with potential for renewal, subject to departmental funding and need.
