The Director, US Policy will support the US commercial business with a focus on the Oncology and Biopharmaceuticals therapeutic areas, reporting to the Head of State and Federal Public Health Policy in the US Corporate Affairs & Government Affairs team. This position will play a critical role in advancing the company’s US policy priorities and executing strategic alignment and pull-through of proactive and reactive policy shaping opportunities including in the areas of: 1) pricing, reimbursement, access, and affordability at the State and Federal levels, 2) patents and intellectual property, 3) tax, workforce development, or 4) US-foreign relations.

Accountabilities/Duties:

  • Develop and execute public policy positions and strategies to support the goals of the US business as a whole, Therapeutic Area priorities, and US Corporate Affairs
  • Proactively collaborate closely with members of the US & Global Government Affairs teams on government affairs priorities
  • Lead the development and execution of internal and external programs to drive awareness around US public policy issues.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on key critical issues
  • Work with US Corporate Affairs, including Patient Advocacy and Government Affairs colleagues to support relationships with key patient groups and other stakeholders on policy issues
  • Participate in trade association work groups to represent the company’s interests
  • Demonstrate and maintain strong working relationships with key external stakeholders (including but not limited to: HHS (especially CMS), the Administration, trade associations, think tanks, and third-party allies)
  • Clearly and impactfully communicate AstraZeneca positions on assigned issues to federal agencies and other external stakeholders


Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • 7+ years of demonstrated success working in public policy arena and/or U.S. government
  • Expert knowledge of the transforming U.S. health system – finance and payment structures, benefit design, care delivery, patents, tax, trade workforce development, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to identify and focus on strategic priorities.
  • Ability to bring together different internal partners, and move an agenda forward to resolution and action
  • Consistent record in identifying policy trends affecting public health and advancing policy solutions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to influence and effectively lead internal and external audiences to desired outcomes
  • Ability to manage numerous, competing priorities under pressure while effectively collaborating with internal partners
  • Sound business judgment and integrity and an ability to build credible, effective working relationships both internally and externally


Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Advanced Degree
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
  • Experience working on Capitol Hill, at a Federal agency or at The White House; or experience working for an advocacy organization
  • Experience with pharmaceutical industry
