The American Library Association (ALA) is seeking a full-time government relations professional to join its public policy team in the ALA Washington Office. ALA is the oldest and largest association for libraries and information centers in the world, delivering pragmatic solutions to pressing issues such as expanding economic opportunity, advancing education and learning in the global economy, as well as strengthening individual rights such as privacy and free speech. RESPONSIBILITIES

The newly organized Public Policy unit of the Washington Office is responsible for articulating ALA concerns and objectives on key policy areas to congressional offices, federal policy makers, federal agencies and other domestic policy players. The successful candidate will execute key components of legislative and regulatory activities.

The candidate must be able to develop productive working relationships with legislators, federal agency employees, the media, representatives from other organizations and ALA members; with the ability to work in a highly fluid environment under special stresses. This position represents ALA in inter-organizational and inter-agency venues; and builds relationships/coalitions with relevant educational, scholarly and trade organizations. Tracks and analyzes congressional, federal, and legal proposals related to library concerns.

Must have an ability to articulate complex policy issues in plain language, an understanding of federal legislative process. Commitment to libraries and an interest in working for a membership organization with strong grassroots networks; excellent written and oral communications skills.

SALARY: Negotiable from the low 50s; based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation and retirement annuity.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university.

• Minimum five years related professional and managerial experience.

• Relevant graduate education or degree is a plus

• Proficiency in MS Office, specifically Access, Excel, and PowerPoint

• Project management experience
