Job Description Summary
The Los Angeles Times is looking to hire a congressional correspondent to join our Washington, D.C., bureau.
We are seeking a candidate who will produce scoops and daily stories under tight deadline pressures on the biggest national stories of the day, with a focus on the power and influence of California’s delegation and how its members’ actions are affecting the state.
Job Description
The successful candidate should possess the ability to build the beat with ambitious ideas and have a proven ability to tell original stories about people and policies relevant to California’s diverse population and to the nation. Equally important will be the ability to translate complicated political debates and processes into stories that appeal to readers who are not D.C. insiders and offer practical information about how those activities will affect their everyday lives.
This candidate must have a proven ability to cover news and write tight analyses with a high level of sophistication, authority and accuracy under demanding deadlines. Previous experience covering politics or a legislative body and the ability to operate in a quick-paced multimedia environment are strongly preferred. As a member of the D.C. bureau team, the reporter must be a generous colleague and be willing to pitch in on all D.C.-related coverage when needed.
Requirements:
  • A minimum of six years of reporting experience
  • Excellent skills in news writing and reporting, combining superior news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations
  • An understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration
  • Experience with investigative reporting, data analysis or public records gathering is a bonus
  • Comfortable appearing on TV, radio and podcasts on behalf of the L.A. Times Impeccable journalistic instincts and an unimpeachable commitment to ethics
This position is listed as Reporter, Washington in the Los Angeles Times Guild and will be based out of The Times' Washington, D.C., bureau. Occasional night and weekend work is expected.

This is the pay scale range the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of this posting.
