This full-time position leads advocacy, education and collaborative engagement efforts for MCC U.S. on U.S. foreign and domestic policy related to climate change, including intersections with migration, food security, conflict, indigenous peoples, colonialism, and racism. The position includes significant speaking, writing, research, analysis, and networking responsibilities and may include mentoring interns. The position is based in Washington, D.C., or in an MCC regional office (Fresno/Reedley, CA; North Newton, KS; Goshen, IN; Philadelphia, PA) and reports to the director of MCC U.S. National Peace & Justice Ministries.
Salaried Employee -Full Time at 1 FTE
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, international affairs, peace studies, political science, theology, history, economics or a related field
- At least 3 years of work or lived experience related to climate change
- Understanding of systemic oppression
- Strong communication skills: written, spoken, and listening
- Strong ability to lead presentations and workshops
- Strong ability to take initiative on projects and work independently
- Ability to work effectively in coalitions and with diverse groups of people
- Ability to work with a variety of age groups, including young adults
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations, including across different languages, customs, values, ethnicities and religious beliefs
- Understanding of and ability to articulate biblical perspectives on public policy, including the ability to communicate with Anabaptist groups across the political and theological spectrum
- Ability to navigate a very complex MCC structure in the U.S./Canada and globally
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple issues and tasks

During the first 3-6 months:
- Facilitate a “comparative advantage” process to collect feedback and determine MCC’s “comparative advantage” for advocacy (i.e., our niche, or, where we can be most effective) and for constituent engagement (i.e., how to most effectively engage the breadth of MCC’s constituents in the U.S.). This will include listening sessions with MCC international and domestic program staff, the MCC U.S. constituent engagement manager, other MCC staff who related to climate work in the U.S., DC-based advocacy staff from partner organizations, representatives from constituent denominations, and staff from constituent partner organizations.
- Use this feedback to shape specific activities and approaches to advocacy and education work.
Collaboration/networking – 30%
- Convene the MCC Climate Change Network (domestic program network) and work with regional program staff on campaigns, resources, events, etc.
- Collaborate extensively with other MCC staff on issues related to climate change (International Program Climate Standing Committee, binational climate change campaign with MCC Canada, corporate responsibility related to mining, MCC U.S. constituency engagement manager, etc.).
- Strengthen existing and build new collaborative relationships with Anabaptist organizations and denominations working to address climate change, including Anabaptist Climate Collaborative, Mennonite Creation Care Network, MCC Thrift and Mennonite Disaster Service.
- Collaborate with partner organizations and represent MCC in interfaith working groups, non-faith-based coalitions, and by sitting on the board of Creation Justice Ministries.
- Sit on the MCC Act Sustainably Team.
- Lead constituent engagement efforts on climate change (related to advocacy and education on systemic issues) through seminars, speaking engagements, experiential activities and responding to direct inquiries.
- Develop educational resources and write articles as needed to provide an Anabaptist perspective on climate change – reaching across the breadth of theological and political perspectives.
- Work to build bridges by utilizing storytelling and illustrating intersections with other MCC priorities, such as racism, indigenous justice, migration, and food security.
- Facilitate advocacy trainings and coordinate congressional meetings on behalf of MCC staff and partners.
- Research, monitor and analyze U.S. domestic and foreign policy by participating in (and, in some instances, giving leadership to) legislative working groups and attending conferences and congressional hearings.
- Prepare action alerts and other materials for constituents to engage in advocacy.
- Meet with congressional and administration offices.

Base salary: $55330.13. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $61477.92 based on previous experience.
Medical, dental and vision, 23 days paid vacation, sick time and 10 holidays/year. Life insurance provided, as well as long and short term disability coverage. The retirement plan, with MCC contribution of 7%, begins after six months of employment.
