Organizational Overview

The Organizing Committee for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will produce the Winter Games in 2034. With the Games nearly nine years away, its initial work will be focused on building awareness, growing supporters, and establishing initial expectations in communities across Utah. In this early stage, the organizing committee will feature a small and lean team that needs to work closely together to maximize its impact. Its team members must be creative and resourceful.


Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator supports the planning and execution of internal and external communications for stakeholder audiences, as outlined in the organization’s Communications Plan, with a strong emphasis on content creation for social media. The role is vital to ensure consistent, strategic messaging to a diverse array of audiences through content creation and distribution.


We are seeking applicants who can demonstrate a deep understanding of the strategic impact that content can have in telling the story of sport and community in Utah, and in carrying that impact across the country and the world. The position reports to the Vice President - Operations and Planning, but works closely with external communications resources for guidance and support.


Planning, Strategy, and Reporting

The communications coordinator must be able to plan strategically within the framework of a defined direction and specific desired outcomes. The position is responsible for working with the organization’s communications plan to develop and execute specific project plans.

  • Develop and manage a content strategy to convey messaging to target audiences across the organization’s distribution platforms.
  • Develop and manage a content calendar to coordinate messaging across all distribution platforms to reach the organization’s audiences.
  • Develop regular management reports to track goals and advise management on communications trends.

Social Media & Website

The position will have a primary responsibility for strategic management of the organizing committee’s digital presence.

  • Manage the organizing committee’s portfolio of social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, and others.
  • Create strategic, message-based content for delivery to targeted stakeholder audiences through social channels.
  • Develop creative collaborations with relevant partners to expand the reach of organizing committee messaging.
  • Monitor, analyze, and react strategically to community engagement on social channels.
  • Manage the organizing committee's website infrastructure, including backend updates and maintenance, working together with outside support resources as necessary.
  • Manage all website content to ensure it conveys the right messaging and remains fresh.

Content Creation

Strategic content creation will be a vital part of the role. The communications coordinator is expected to be self-sufficient in developing content, utilizing a wide range of skills.

  • Align with the organizing committee’s brand voice, focusing on sport, community, and the positive values that Utah represents.
  • Engage around a central theme of athletes to tell the story of the culture of sport in Utah, and its positive impact on society.
  • Using the organizing committee’s messaging direction, lead ideation on content creation to tell the story of sport and community leading up to 2034.
  • Use graphical design skills to create visually appealing and impactful graphical content for digital channels.
  • Use videography and photography skills to create impactful content for digital channels.
  • Creatively source outside video and photography as needed from stock channels or other content developers.

Stakeholder Communications

The communications coordinator will work with the organizing committee team to identify message-based communications for delivery to target stakeholder audiences.

  • Work with the organizing committee team to develop and maintain a database of stakeholder audiences with regular updates.
  • Develop written communications, including targeted letters, newsletters, and updates, for strategic dissemination to stakeholders.
  • Manage the strategic distribution of email content to target audiences.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet these minimum qualifications to be considered.

  • Two years or more working in the communications field, with a special emphasis on time spent in content development, strategic social media, and website management.
  • Willing to live full-time in the greater Salt Lake City area and spend time in the organizing committee office in downtown Salt Lake City.
  • Exceptional writing skills, strong grammar, and understanding of how to create message-driven written content for specific target audiences.
  • Personal knowledge and passion for Olympic and Paralympic sport.
  • Resourceful, creative, innovative worker.
  • Proven ability to work together within a team.

Skills

Candidates must possess these skills to be considered.

  • Competency with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, both in native applications and cloud-based services.
  • Competency with photo, video, audio editing, and graphical design tools, such as Canva, Adobe Suite, Final Cut, and others.
  • Competency with email and CRM systems, such as MailChimp, ConstantContact, or comparable.
  • Competency in the use of AI tools for content creation and management.
  • Competency with digital content management systems, including social media posting tools, and website content management systems such as WordPress.

Work Environment

The Communications Coordinator is an entry-level professional role but one that can grow with the organizing committee over the next eight+ years. It offers an opportunity for an innovative, eager, self-starter to grow and build a career working on a small team.


It is a hybrid role, expected to spend collaborative time in the downtown Salt Lake City office on a regular basis, but also able to work remotely part of the week. While it is a hybrid role, we expect the Communications Coordinator to live in the greater Salt Lake City region to be a part of the sport culture of the state.


It is a full-time role with the organizing committee with a primary Monday through Friday work schedule, adjusted based on events and other specific needs. Some travel may be required.
