Job Description
Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) is seeking a detail-oriented, dynamic, and highly motivated Press Secretary to manage and coordinate in-state and/or national media activities and develop and execute a robust Franked communications plan. This position reports to the Chief of Staff.
Key Responsibilities:
· Works with the Member and Chief of Staff to develop and implement an aggressive and comprehensive communications and media strategy that promotes the Member’s priorities
· Drafts background memos, press advisories, press releases, statements, op-eds, remarks, and other materials
· Stays informed on and anticipates press inquiries on current issues impacting the Member and the district
· Monitors news coverage to determine how the Member and his agenda are portrayed by the media
· Prepares the Member for media interviews
· Builds and maintains relationships with local, state, and national reporters to book the member for media spots
· Works with the Digital Manager to create and distribute digital content such as social media, newsletters, and surveys in a timely manner
· Works with the Chief of Staff, District Director, and Operations Director to plan, prepare, and staff news conferences, media hits, and other events
Requirements:
- Able to work a flexible schedule that accommodates the needs of the Member’s schedule
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Able to manage competing priorities and balance multiple and often tight deadlines
- Enjoys working in a collaborative environment
- Experience developing a communications strategy for a Member of Congress or another entity
- Experience managing relationships with members of the media
- Attention to detail
- Capable of developing and applying creative solutions
Prior communications experience is strongly preferred as is experience with pitching to national, state and local media outlets. Communications, Journalism, and English Majors are encouraged to apply. Fluency in Spanish, experience with Adobe programs, and ties to Texas, particularly South Texas, are a plus.
