The Government Affairs team is looking for a Local and State Government Affairs Senior Manager at the San Francisco headquarters of Gap Inc. We seek someone who is proactive and can work independently while also organizing effective coalitions, has a strong interest in the retail industry, maintains close ties to local and state government, and a deep understanding of the legislative process.

The Senior Manager of Local and State Government Affairs will lead efforts to shape local and state public policy, ensuring a sustainable business climate, and promoting the mission of our co-founders, Doris and Don Fisher, to “do more than sell clothes.” The Senior Manager will serve as an advocate and liaison for local and state issues to key stakeholders, including elected officials, trade associations and other policymakers. This individual will monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments on local and state issues, communicating and advising on the status of priority issues and potential impact to the company. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Government Affairs, this person will be a strategic thinker who looks several moves ahead, developing and implementing strategies to ensure Gap Inc.'s corporate interests are advanced in legislation and regulatory policy.

What you'll do

Advocate for Gap Inc.’s position on key issues, such as tax, data privacy, organized retail crime, workforce issues, and sustainability. Draft briefing memos, talking points, and testimony.

Develop and implement advocacy strategies to advance Gap Inc.’s business priorities by: using campaign approaches, working with consultants, building coalitions and engaging other voices to support business objectives

Drive Gap Inc.’s engagement in relevant business groups and associations and support business strategy and execution

Develop and implement a strategy for local community engagement, in partnership with Gap Foundation

Communicate personally and work successfully with local and state officials and staff, and other key stakeholders, in a professional, informed manner

Participate in cross-functional teams to help shape government affairs and sustainability work as part of Gap Inc.’s global sustainability initiatives

Represent the company at external engagement activities

Who you are

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

8+ years of experience in local or state government affairs, public policy or related areas

Exceptional communication skills in public and private settings, in both presentation and written formats, including briefings, correspondence, and policy papers. Ability to translate complex technical issues and interpret and analyze political developments, policy and legislative proposals

Ability to work cross-functionally with leaders at various levels in the organization in a professional manner and work well with individuals in multiple departments and brands

Experience in planning and executing campaigns and leading multiple projects simultaneously with varying deadlines

Sound judgment and interpersonal skills with high degree of political astuteness, especially navigating political situations and structures.

Independent, self-starter with excellent time management skills and well organized with attention to detail
