Job Description
The New York Philharmonic connects with up to 50 million music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. The 2022–23 season marks a new chapter in the life of America’s longest living orchestra with the opening of the reimagined David Geffen Hall and programming that engages with today’s cultural conversations through explorations of HOME, LIBERATION, SPIRIT, and EARTH, in addition to the premieres of 16 works. This marks the return from the pandemic, when the NY Phil launched NY Phil Bandwagon, presenting free performances across the city, and 2021–22 concerts at other New York City venues.
The New York Philharmonic seeks a Development Writer to prepare compelling, meaningful, and persuasive print and multi-media content in support of the organization’s stewardship, engagement, and fundraising efforts.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with colleagues across the Philharmonic to envision and create a variety of assets; including reports for individuals, acknowledgement letters, profiles, proposals, etc.
- Develop deep content knowledge of the New York Philharmonic’s programs and priorities and serve as a resource on those areas.
- Cultivate an understanding of individual donor priorities and ensure that reporting and messaging aligns with their interests and philanthropic wishes. Craft meaningful and timely donor acknowledgements and reports.
- Work with internal stakeholders to ensure the sharing of information, consistent messaging, and to avoid duplication of effort and resources. Maintain a library of information and assets.
- Draft thank you letters in the written voice of various organization leaders
- Drive multiple projects to completion while meeting deadlines. Establish priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval.
- Conduct research and interviews with internal and external stakeholders to acquire information quickly and accurately. Seek and vet materials with appropriate artistic, administrative, and development leadership.
- Write with a consistent quality, tone and style. Use strong editorial judgement and skills in writing, proofreading, and editing.
- Undertake various fundraising- and stewardship-related projects as needed, and contribute to the planning, processes and policies that support the Development Office.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3 years related work experience. Experience in communications with extensive responsibility for writing, track record of efficiently researching new topics, synthesizing complex information and translating those concepts into written materials. Excellent writing and oral communication skills, with strong attention to detail. Collaborating with multiple departments as well as external stakeholders, ability to juggle multiple time-sensitive projects and adjust to changing priorities. Strong strategic thinking, sound judgment, collaborative spirit and interest in classical music.
