Job Description

Location: New York, NY or Albany, NY

The State of New York’s Executive Chamber (Office of the Governor) has an immediate opening for an experienced writer and communications specialist to join the speechwriting team for Governor Kathy Hochul, in a senior-level role, as Deputy Director of Speechwriting.

We are looking for someone who is a talented writer, with a deft editing hand, who can absorb detailed government policy, inject it with emotion, and turn it into compelling, effortless prose. Gov. Hochul has a bold vision for New York’s future -- and the qualified candidate will have a strong grasp of the type of persuasive language needed to rally support for the polices that will make it real.

The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under tight deadlines, is essential – as is an understanding of government and politics. Past speechwriting experience – ideally for a high-level principal – is also strongly-preferred.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting speeches, talking points, scripts, and other related materials.
  • Actively collaborating with policy makers and senior government officials to ensure message cohesion and accuracy.
  • Conducting research to support and strengthen prepared remarks.
  • Editing draft remarks and talking points written by other speechwriters on the team.
  • Helping to manage the day-to-day operations of the Executive Chamber’s speechwriting team.

Required Qualifications:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college.
  • Seven to ten years of professional experience, including in journalism, executive communications, public relations, and/or speechwriting/policy writing.
  • Speechwriting for a high-level principal strongly preferred.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in government or political campaigns strongly encouraged.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Punctuality, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and high-pressure situations.
  • Experience and comfort working in a deadline-driven environment.
