As a leader on the State Policy team, you will work closely with the regional & functional policy teams, as well as the communications & legal teams on priority policy issues. These issues include: free expression, innovation, data privacy and security, online safety, and data center issues. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to help execute strategies on both reactive and forward-looking policies related to those and other issues as they arise. You will also coordinate strategic outreach to State-level policymakers, stakeholders, and industry. You will lead a team responsible for Meta’s State policy outreach in 19 states in the Southern/Southeastern U.S.The ideal candidate is a public policy expert with strong State policy and management experience who is passionate about Meta, understands its policies and business priorities, is intellectually curious, and able to function in a fast-paced environment where there are often shifting priorities. Highly motivated and a natural self-starter, this person will also have the opportunity to create new processes, manage information in a visually appealing and easy-to-understand way, and help drive results across a team of dynamic communicators and policy professionals, understanding different perspectives and working to identify the best path forward.


Director, Public Policy, Southern & Southeastern US Responsibilities:


  • Work directly with state policymakers to promote the safe and efficient use of internet technologies and economic development in the region.
  • Monitor the political environment and identify opportunities to advance state policies that benefit the company, the state, and our local communities where we reside.
  • Work closely with industry groups, nonprofits and legislative organizations to promote company objectives for economic development and a safe, secure, and open internet.
  • Manage relationships with state policymakers.
  • Ensure that Meta cross-functional partners and internal stakeholders receive timely updates on developments.
  • Develop strategies for engagement with chambers of commerce, industry associations, non-profits, and civil society groups to advance priorities in region.
  • Manage 2 Meta State Policy personnel in broader region while also individually responsible for 3-5 states.
  • Willingness to travel (primarily in-region) up to 60% of the time based on need.
  • Advise Meta teams on public policy matters to guide development of products, services and policies.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelors degree
  • 10+ years of experience in state public policy, advocacy, or government affairs
  • Experience with the political process, policymakers, and stakeholders in region and proven relationships in region
  • Proven familiarity with the technology and economic development policy and advocacy landscape in region
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams
  • Experience as a manager (2+ reports) and budget manager
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implement advocacy campaigns directly relevant to state government, including achieving short and long term milestones related to advancing policy, political and/or advocacy goals
  • Creative problem-solving, negotiation, and multi-tasking skills in time-sensitive settings
  • Experience communicating nuanced concepts to a wide array of audiences

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Law or Master’s degree
  • Experience managing trade associations and contract lobbyists
  • Previous state policy experience in tech or tech-adjacent industry
