Job Description
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active and qualified Press Assistant with strong writing and organizational skills to join her Washington, D.C. office. Duties include assisting the communications team with day-to-day operations—including but not limited to tracking press clips; updating and maintaining press contact lists; conducting research projects; assisting with social media, and, drafting press releases, media advisories, speeches, and video scripts. The ideal candidate for this position is team-oriented; works well under pressure; has excellent written and verbal communications skills; pays close attention to detail; and has an interest in media and politics and a desire to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- News Monitoring/clipping: Keeps track of local and national stories and assembles a daily news clips report, clip all hearings/media hits/floor speeches
- Writing: Drafts press releases and media advisories for distribution to local events/weekly WV press avail and national media. Writes video scripts, weekly memos, quotes, and speeches.
- Additional Responsibilities: Maintains and updates press distribution list, interview transcript bank, keep account of media hits and press placement (interview tracker, op-ed tracker).
Requirements
- Communications degree or at least 1-2 years of professional experience in communications.
- Outstanding writing and communication skills.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Candidates well-versed in AP style are strongly preferred.
