The Advocacy & Organizing Coordinator is responsible for executing and supporting YWCA Columbus’s advocacy program and public policy work in areas concerning racial and gender equity, and systemic intersections of poverty, housing, education, community safety, and health. This position will support the work of the Leadership & Social Justice Department by engaging allied coalitions and community partners on advocacy issues, mobilizing volunteers to participate in advocacy activities, and conduct policy analysis and research aligned with YWCA Columbus’ advocacy agenda. The Advocacy & Organizing Coordinator must be comfortable interacting with various constituencies and should be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Examples of Duties:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with statewide associations, partner organizations and allied coalitions, policy makers, elected officials and their staff to build awareness of and support for YWCA Columbus’s public policy and advocacy priorities.
  • Grow grassroots advocacy by developing and executing a grassroots engagement plan in alignment with agency’s advocacy agenda, including implementation of EveryAction.
  • Support agency’s civic and voter engagement efforts, including collaboration with external partners on awareness campaigns and events, and internal partners to engage YWCA residents, program participants and alumni network.
  • Conduct policy analysis and research for mission-aligned issues.
  • Research, write, and support publishing high-quality advocacy materials including issue briefs, reports, testimony, public-facing statements, newsletter content, etc.
  • Monitor and analyze federal, state, and local legislative and regulatory developments that relate to agency’s advocacy agenda, execute agency advocacy action plan related to developments, and communicate with policymakers and stakeholders about relevant policy issues.
  • Work with Volunteer & Donations Manager to lead volunteers through activities including advocacy training, phone banking, text banking, canvassing, social media campaigns, etc.
  • Partner with Marketing & Communications Department on communication strategies and identify opportunities to connect with YWCA constituency for calls to action that educate audiences and develop broad advocacy base.
  • Prepare annual advocacy agenda in collaboration with Director of Advocacy and YWCA Columbus leadership, and spearhead the Resident Advocacy Council, including preparing meeting agendas, taking minutes, and presenting issues as needed.
  • Organize events and meetings related to advocacy issues. Create and facilitate training, workshops, and presentations on advocacy issues for internal staff and stakeholders, organizations and community members.
  • Represent YWCA Columbus in public functions and conferences, and before constituency groups, policymakers and the news media through presentations, testimony, and other means.
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate advocacy work and other engagement activities and produce accurate and timely reporting of program status throughout its life cycle to Director of Advocacy and Director of Leadership & Social Justice.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of justice, equity, liberation, and empowerment.
  • Bachelor's degree in political science, social science, public policy and management, or related field; or equivalent, relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with racial and gender equity issues, especially at the intersection of LGBTQ+ rights, K12 and higher education equity, public safety, reproductive justice, and civic engagement.
  • Experience applying intersectional and critical lenses to policy analysis and implementation.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and compile complex data for planning and reporting purposes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization externally across a wide range of stakeholders and constituencies, including public speaking engagements, facilitation, leading training and workshops.
  • Experience with community organizing methodologies and movement building.
  • Experience building relationships and partnerships with other organizations, in coalitions, or other community spaces.
  • Experience with digital organizing tools including CRMs, data tools, email platforms, relational organizing tools, volunteer management systems, social media, Zoom, etc.
