Career Advancement serves a student population of approximately 7,000 arts and sciences undergraduate students, in addition to alumni who have graduated within the last five years. Career Advancement plays a vital role in ensuring our students’ success after graduation. Career Advancement offers innovative and comprehensive career development services with a focus on pre-professional preparation, experiential education, and opportunities. Through career advising, programs, and comprehensive resources, Career Advancement supports undergraduate students and alumni as they develop the skills necessary to manage their career development, while working with alumni and employers to provide students with meaningful opportunities. Job Summary
UChicago Career Advancement’s Careers In . . . programs build on the world-class UChicago liberal arts foundation to give students a competitive edge in their professional development. The Careers in Policy and Social Impact program provides expert advising, employer connections, and career exploration and experiential learning opportunities to help students launch successful careers in fields such as public policy, think tanks, government, and nonprofits. The Fried Senior Program Director will oversee the Careers in Policy and Social Impact team, which is responsible for one-on-one career advising, selective cohorts, the development and execution of career-related experiential activities, as well as interface with faculty, high-profile employers, parents and alumni to support careers in public policy and service. The position will collaborate with campus and employer partners to prepare students for internships, jobs, and graduate school placements by applying what they have learned in the classroom and building the skills they need to thrive in the competitive job market.
Responsibilities
Manages and leads a team to develop and implement a cohesive strategy for student success in public policy careers through early engagement and ongoing support.
Regularly communicates program successes to Career Advancement, ESA, program donors and University leadership through the creation of memos, reports, and other written material.
Supervises team members who manage the Public Policy Leaders (a selective track for students committed to public interest careers), the Global Health Scholars (a selective track for students committed to global health careers) and the Merriam Scholars (a merit award program for top students interested in public interest careers).
Directs team members who manage the Luther H. Foster, Jr. Public Service Internship Program, a selective track program dedicated to promoting the success of underrepresented populations pursuing public interest careers and providing opportunities for students who are committed to amplifying underrepresented voices in politics and social impact.
Provides strategic oversight of the design and implementation of career programs and resources that successfully place all students interested in public policy and related fields in full time and internship opportunities.
Oversees the organization and implementation of programs and workshops to support placement success in public policy and related fields (e.g., policy competitions, coordinating internships at top employers, overseeing workshops, planning and leading career exploration trips to local Chicago organizations, U.S. cities and internationally).
Provides team oversight for important University priorities such as sustainability and green careers.
Coordinates team to provide high-quality, individualized career advising to undergraduate students and alumni through one-on-one career advising sessions.
Administers the development and implementation of a strategic employer development plan for assigned industry areas including outreach to new employers and employer visits as appropriate.
Strategically leverages programs’ financial resources to deliver high-quality student opportunities.
Leads a team to ensure a high level of customer service and support to employers who partner with the Fried Public Policy and Service program.
Works closely with the Harris School of Public Policy, the Social Sciences Division, the Center for Global Health, Pozen Family Center for Human Rights, RSOs and other campus partners to assess and improve top employers’ awareness of UChicago programs and students.
Connects students to graduate school resources at the University of Chicago.
Assembles campus and industry resources to assist students in gaining experience and networking opportunities.
Analyzes placement and survey data to develop data-driven strategic initiatives.
Manages managers and professional staff within Career Services. Establishes performance goals, allocates resources and assesses policies for direct subordinates.
Expands and enhances the University's corporate network through marketing and outreach strategies and meetings with employers and alumni to increase resources and employment opportunities to students.
Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Master’s degree in higher education, science, or a related field.
Doctoral degree in higher education, science, or a related field.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
Expertise in counseling, program development, or a related area.
Knowledge of career development theory and strong coaching or counseling skills.
Preferred Competencies
Deep commitment to customer service, prioritize and balance different work streams, meet deadlines, and work successfully in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated success in maintaining collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Strong interpersonal, quantitative, and networking skills. Background developing and delivering presentations.
Communicate to large groups as well as one-on-one with students, senior management, faculty, and alumni.
Working knowledge with college-aged students and/or recent college graduates; previous experience developing and managing an internship program a plus.
Expertise in program development, or a related area. Prior small-group program management and/or event planning.
Successful experience working both independently and in cross-functional teams.
Strong coaching or counseling skills.
Solid management and leadership qualities, including both the ability to delegate and execute, thereby leading by work and example.
Self-directed, results-oriented work ethic.
Working Conditions
Work evening hours and weekends on an occasional basis (generally 1-2 days per month).
Willing and able to travel (generally two or three times per year).
