Job Description
The Accounting & Finance Manager serves as NATS’s lead internal accounting professional, with responsibility for hands-on bookkeeping, accounting, and oversight of the organization’s financial systems and processes. We are seeking a seasoned professional with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar field, significant nonprofit accounting experience, and at least eight years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience; CPA certification is strongly preferred.
This is a key role on a small, fully remote staff. The Manager will personally perform and oversee accounting activities, help strengthen systems and procedures, ensure GAAP principles are consistently applied, and work closely with the Executive Director on the organization’s finances.
NATS is strengthening and modernizing its accounting infrastructure. The Manager will work with outside accounting expertise to implement improved procedures, stronger financial reporting, a revised chart of accounts, and better tracking of donations and releases from restrictions, while also helping ensure QuickBooks Online is used to its fullest extent.
What Success Looks Like
- You are equally comfortable doing the work and improving how the work gets done. You are not intimidated by complexity, imperfect records, or historical transactions that require research and follow-up. You are willing to dig in, figure out what happened, and help build a stronger path forward.
- You are eager to be part of a major accounting transformation. You are energized by the opportunity to help improve systems, processes, documentation, internal controls, reporting, and the overall structure of the accounting function. You are comfortable working through change and helping turn recommendations into practical, sustainable ways of working.
- You are curious and learn new organizations quickly. You want to understand NATS programs, membership, events, auditions, fundraising, chapters, and regions so you understand the activity behind the numbers and can make better accounting decisions. You ask good questions, connect the dots, and recognize that accurate accounting depends on understanding how the organization actually operates.
- You understand how financial information moves between systems. You know that automation does not eliminate the need for oversight. You are comfortable reviewing imports, integrations, data flows, and exceptions, and you take responsibility for making sure information lands in the right place, is coded correctly, and can be trusted.
