Project Overview:
From the earliest reports of COVID-19, PIH raced into action, working with our teams around the world to prepare the same comprehensive approach that we have engaged in for a generation. As the pandemic unfolded, it became clear that the response needed to contain the novel virus exceeds the existing capacity and expertise within many public health systems, including state and municipal departments across the United States. This reality presented an opportunity for PIH to consider how to adapt and apply lessons learned from other epidemics and from responses to addressing COVID-19 within the other countries where we work to the context of the United States and has positioned PIH with the ability to rapidly inform congressional and executive level policy plans for continued COVID-19 response and to present alternative, more equitable, policy recommendations for the future of health programming domestically and globally.
Position Overview
The Advocacy Associate will execute key aspects of Partners In Health’s health policy advocacy strategy. They will ensure the delivery of high-quality advocacy tactics with the legislative branch of the US Government and perform a range of policy analysis and related work – including informing legislative text, policy papers, advocacy materials and policy recommendations – to influence health policies and decision makers in advancing a more just and equitable US and global public health infrastructure. The successful candidate will have experience and skills in managing relationships with coalitions and partner organizations. They will have experience with policy analysis within the US context and in communicating evidence to decision makers. They will understand the importance of data as the foundation of sound policies, and will be able to create advocacy materials that compellingly integrate evidence on complex concepts in accessible formats and messages.
They will work closely with the PIH US Public Health Accompaniment Unit and the broader PIH advocacy team on time-sensitive policy advocacy efforts to inform and finance the US’s ongoing response to COVID-19 domestically as well as globally and work to bring together advocacy for public financing for health care with the need for rebuilding the US’s community and public health infrastructure.
While the focus of the work will be primarily on COVID-19, the Advocacy Associate may be asked to be flexible and simultaneously juggle projects outside of this portfolio in alignment with priorities of the PIH Advocacy Team.
Responsibilities
Provide input and execute on PIH’s health policy advocacy strategy;
Conduct analysis to inform the strategic direction of PIH’s policy and advocacy work;
Conduct outreach, as directed, to U.S. government officials, legislative bodies, and other key policy partners;
Support coalition processes by organizing knowledge management systems, guiding publication process, and supporting the advocacy team in tracking progress toward goals;
Coordinate the research, writing, editing, and publishing of policy papers, policy briefs, policy recommendations, advocacy materials, reports and articles, and internal messaging through collaboration across the organization for US and global health policy efforts;
Liaise with members of PIH’s marketing and communications team
Assist with grant reporting and grant management as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree; at least 1-3 years of related experience preferred. Advanced degree in a related field is a bonus;
Strong communication and writing skills;
Experience with political, issue-based, or affinity group advocacy work required.
Understanding of and ability to clearly communicate topics related to health care, health equity, and social justice.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Ability to work in a remote environment.
Strong internal communications skills;
Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country.
Commitment to social justice.
Experience interpreting and developing legislative text required.
