AI and Fiscal Policy Fellow 

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (Committee) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization devoted to educating policymakers, the media and citizens about the fiscal challenges facing the country, as well as policy options and solutions. The Committee is made up of some of the nation’s leading budget experts including many of the past Chairmen and Directors of the Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Government Accountability Office.  

The Committee is seeking an AI and Fiscal Policy Fellow for a one-year fellowship who would be responsible for helping build a body of research and analysis examining the intersection of artificial intelligence, the federal budget, and the U.S. economy. 

Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly affect fiscal policymaking through its impact on economic growth, labor markets, productivity, government operations, national security, and the nation's long-term fiscal outlook. Yet many important questions remain unanswered, which may include: How will potential economic growth from AI affect federal revenues? How will AI’s effects on the workforce impact federal spending, including existing or new forms of safety net programs? How should policymakers think about fiscal risks and opportunities created by the rapid and uncertain pace of technological change associated with AI? What budget policies may best position the United States to maximize AI's benefits while achieving fiscal sustainability? 

The AI and Fiscal Policy Fellow will work with the Committee to advance research and analysis addressing these types of questions. The Fellow will work across the Committee’s policy, communications, and legislative teams and be responsible for a research agenda on AI's implications for the federal budget, economic growth, and long-term fiscal policy. 

This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to help shape an emerging field of public policy while contributing to the Committee’s mission of educating the public and policymakers about the nation's fiscal challenges and advancing responsible fiscal policy solutions. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Conduct original research on the implications of artificial intelligence for federal fiscal policy
• Analyze how AI may affect economic growth, labor markets, productivity, tax revenues, federal spending, and long-term budget projections  
• Write policy briefs, reports, blog posts, issue papers, presentations, and other written products  
• Catalog existing policy ideas, develop new promising policy proposals, and evaluate their fiscal implications 
• Track emerging research, policy debates, and legislative developments related to AI and the federal budget
• Build relationships with researchers, think tanks, government officials, academic experts, and companies working on AI and public policy
• Help organize convenings, roundtables, and other events focused on AI and fiscal policy  

Qualifications: 

• Demonstrated experience in economics, fiscal policy, technology policy or a related field, along with a strong understanding of artificial intelligence policy and its economic policy implications
• At least five years of relevant professional or doctoral research experience in economics, fiscal policy, technology policy, artificial intelligence or a related field
• Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills
• Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly to broad audiences  
• Experience conducting policy research as well as with economic data, modeling, forecasting, or quantitative analysis 
• Demonstrated ability to manage an independent research project while collaborating across multiple teams  
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail  
• Commitment to rigorous, nonpartisan analysis  
• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or Ph.D. degree in relevant field preferred

Salary: $75,000 to $115,000, contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate, with generous benefits package including health, dental, life and long-term disability insurance. Stipend for part-time fellow of $35,000-$50,000, based on experience.
