Job Description
The Assistant Dean for Washington Programs directs a year-round academic center in the nation’s capital. The Washington Center hosts around 200 students annually for a combination of courses and internships with diverse organizations in the nation’s capital. The Assistant Dean teaches a 6-credit undergraduate traveling seminar twice per year, currently focused on foreign policy decision making. The Assistant Dean provides faculty supervision and mentorship for all undergraduate and graduate interns (100 internships at 60 DC-based organizations in AY 2018-19). The Assistant Dean recruits and retains faculty to teach across all levels, assesses and strengthens the curriculum, develops new programs and initiatives, creates and nurtures institutional partnerships, and promotes the Washington Programs to current and future stakeholders. This is a 12-month position.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in international affairs, public administration, or similar field required. Doctoral degree preferred.
Higher education teaching and academic administration experience highly desired.
Job Specific Qualifications
Background in Higher education teaching and academic administration experience.
Understanding of DC policy community.
Understanding of curriculum development at a University.
Knowledge of best practices in graduate and undergraduate recruitment and enrollment management
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with partners and colleagues across a complex institutional framework.
Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
Responsibilities
Supervise undergraduate and graduate internships and mentor students; provide career networking guidance; organize and lead professional development workshops for students and alumni.
Serve as program director for the EMIR in DC: recruit students, hold promotional events, liaise with main campus on admissions and student services, advise students, build alumni community. Strategically develop the partnership with CSIS, work to create additional linkages for curriculum, programming, and research. Collaborate on outreach and curriculum design.
Build relationships with DC policy community: government agencies, foreign embassies, NGOs, trade associations, private sector contractors, etc., as pipelines for student internships, alumni connections, and feeder organizations for the EMIR in DC and other programming. Play key role in Maxwell’s overall outreach in Washington, DC. Nurture existing and develop new college/university partnerships; travel to Pittsburgh, Denver, Boston, and Wooster to recruit students/promote the program.
Recruit, coach, supervise, and retain adjunct faculty. Develop and review all aspects of the curriculum for the several programs. Supervise DC-based staff; review their performance.
Oversee and review the annual budget (multiple program budgets) for DC operations. Draft MOUs and terms of reference; prepare and project budgets for institutional partnerships. Oversee administrative, logistical, and budgetary aspects of student apartments.
Teaching the undergraduate traveling seminar and/or periodic teaching to support programmatic needs and initiatives.
