Reports To: Executive Director of Government Affairs in Agriculture, Food Policy, and Cattle Health. This position is based in the NCBA Center for Public Policy office in Washington, DC
General Responsibilities:
Provides assistance and guidance to NCBA on matters pertaining to animal health, animal well-being, and food safety. Responsible for analyzing and monitoring issues and regulations regarding animal health, well-being, and working with FSIS on Food Safety issues. Provides reports and feedback to the Executive Director of the Cattle Health Team. Works closely with the Producer Education team on Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and works with Issues and Reputation Management team to monitor topics that pertain to animal health and well-being, as well as Food Safety. Develops and maintains a professional relationship with Federal and State agencies, veterinary professional organizations, and other groups involved in or affecting the regulation of animal health, pharmaceutical agents, and food safety.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a team member/staff for the Cattle Health and Well-Being Committee.
Acts as internal resource for NCBA staff, leadership, and committees on issues related to food safety, and animal health and welfare.
Analyzes bills, studies, and reports for policy staff in order to provide counsel, advice, and guidance on rules, regulations, legislation, and policies regarding food safety and animal health and welfare.
Works with the Chief Veterinarian in advancing NCBA priorities through the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Serves as the beef industry representative for the U.S. Delegation to the Codex Alimentarius meetings.
Leads NCBA efforts working on the ISO animal welfare standards project and leads on animal welfare issues for the beef industry to include managing the NCBA Animal Welfare Advisory Group.
Builds relationships with other livestock groups, government employees, and NCBA members to effectively work these issues directly with the government or through a coalition.
Serves as alternate representative for NCBA and the U.S. beef industry on the AVMA Animal Agriculture Liaison Committee (AALC).
Coordinates with NCBA’s Senior Director of International Trade and Market Access to work with the International Beef Alliance countries regarding international animal welfare issues.
Works with NCBA’s representative to the U.S./Mexico Bi-National Tuberculosis and Brucellosis Committee.
Works with the Cattle Health Team to prepare comments, testimony, and letters on issues relating to animal health and well-being.
Maintains active membership and regularly attends the meetings of the veterinary professional organizations—AVMA, AABP, and AVC—representing the interests of NCBA.
All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have an advanced degree in animal science or public health.
Candidates with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited veterinary college will also be considered.
This professional must have exceptional interpersonal skills, excellent organizational and analytical skills, proficient in public speaking and writing, and a working commitment to our organization’s values.
Microsoft suite experience (Excel, Word, and Power point) required.
Some travel required.
